Smallest cost x weight for a Production Bicycle
Moderator: robbosmans
The goal of this thread, is to look for production bicycles (fully equipped bicycle) that give the smallest number for:
(P / $3000USD) * (W / 6800g)^3
or even simpler P*W^3
where P is price and W is weight of the entire bicycle (estimated for a 54 cm frame).
You can estimate a 30 gram difference, I think, for every 2cm change in frame size.
If bicycle is on sale at a reduced price, use the reduced price. Confounding the issue, is that prices may be different due to taxes in some countries, so if you can try to exclude tax or import tariff (numbers can be compared only if they are alike).
Let's divide P * W^3 by 10^12, as smaller numbers are easier on the eyes, and call this the PW factor.
Only Dura Ace, Sram Red, or Campagnolo Record / Super Record equipped bicycles need apply.
Cannondale? Trek? Cervelo? Specialized? Focus? Fuji? Giant? Felt?

Stock bike weight is probably wildly inaccurate. This discussion will be useless.

Only if that leads to the lowest W*P number. If the weight goes up too much, then that may not be the case. Besides, companies such as the ones I listed, put forth their best frames with the top components.

Not to mention that all the stock components are usually garbage unless you're paying a premium ($7k+), so if you end up changing out the stock parts (handlebars, stem, wheelset, etc) then the original stock bike weight is even more useless.
To the OP, if cost/value is priority, have you considered just buying a frame and sourcing the parts separately? This is the cheapest route to take to get the best parts, especially if you're deadset on a high end groupset (in contrast, getting a stock Ultegra bike is usually a bargain).
I don't think you should value stock weight at all.. just choose the one with the best frameset you like and go from there. You will always have the opportunity to upgrade parts and save weight afterward but you'll be stuck with the frameset.
Again, this is about getting the lowest number for Weight multiplied by Price. If they make the bike heavy with cheap components, they won't win here. Only if they optimize for lowest W * P.bilwit wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 7:23 pmNot to mention that all the stock components are usually garbage unless you're paying a premium ($7k+), so if you end up changing out the stock parts (handlebars, stem, wheelset, etc) then the original stock bike weight is even more useless.

Off topic, is that I have made a bicycle from parts. That's not what this thread happens to be about.
I remember seeing someone trying to find the lightest bike for a set budget with new components at online prices (not MSRP), I think they settled on a closeout Rose X-Light and built it up with Red. I don't remember the final price but it was definitely in the 6.8kg or less range and <3k Euro.
I looked, and couldn't find this bike. The only stock production bike from Rose, with top groupset, does not come with Red. It comes with dura ace: https://www.rosebikes.com/bike/rose-bac ... id:2681132morganb wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 7:50 pmI remember seeing someone trying to find the lightest bike for a set budget with new components at online prices (not MSRP), I think they settled on a closeout Rose X-Light and built it up with Red. which gives the PW factor: 7655g * 3572 usd (2900 euros)
PW^3 factor 16.1

Weight weenies front page drew me to this:

PW factor: 7550g * 2464 usd (2000 euros)
PW^3 factor: 10.6
Wow, I didn't think you could get a top groupset on a bike for under $3000 usd. Revising original thread.
On this bike, the wheels are over 2kg! But it gets you something ready to ride if you don't have the $$ or time to be a batshit crazy weenie who has spent tons of time looking at bicycle parts for weeks (father, I have sinned).

PW factor: 7303+30g * 2550 usd (2070 euros)
PW factor (amazon): 7333g * 2300 usd
I added 30g, as the 7303 quoted was for size small, and the medium best fits a size 54cm (per original instruction). I'm forgiving that it has an ultegra crankset.
The PW factor, lets divide it by 10^6, to have a reasonable number. Both the bikes in the last two posts have a PW factor of 18.6. Update: with the amazon price, the PW factor is 16.9.
PW^3 factor: 9.07
