mixing SRAM and Shimano cassette intos 14-36

My father is 66 years old and likes to ride in the mountains.

I made him a 14-32 cassette from a 11-32 and 14-28 ultegra cassette and he loves it.
He likes to close ratio's and the low gears. He does not care for top end gears, he 'd rather coast.
Last week he said he would like to have a few teeth extra for the steepest climbs.

Sram makes a 11-36 that only has 32-36 on a spider.
Has anyone tried to mix shimano and SRAM cogs in 1 cassette?

I am afraid that the shifting from the last shimano cog onto the bigger SRAM cog won't work properly due to tooth design an possibly a differnce in cog thickness. (wifer cogs+ smaller spacers or visa versa)

Any real world experiences?

(He does not want to change his crankset for a subcompact or MTB crank)

Please specify the goupset but more specifically the shifter and rear derailleur.

If he is already starting from a 14t cog it makes no sense to not go smaller on the crankset. By simply restoring the 11-32 cassette and going 20% smaller on the inner chainring he would get the gear ratio he wants on the 32t cog. (If he enjoys close ratios then maybe put an 11-28 11speed cassette and a small inner chainring. Like a 26-30t)

It's lighter and slimmer. Nicer looking and so on. What's the bike's bottom bracket standard?

If you want help to put on a 36-42 cassette that is also possible. It most likely will require changing chain and rear derailleur.

Your dad is really cool I think. Get him what he wants and keep him on the bike.

He does not want to change his crank because he likes the look of it.

46/30 rings would be an alternative but I have not found round ones that are compatible and nice looking. it would also mean I would have to wchange the cassette from 14-32 to 12-32 or 13-32

I like the idea of shimano + 36T extender and the mix of Shimano 14-32 with SRAM 11-36.

Has anyone experiences with A an 36T Extender or B mixing Sram en Shimano cogs.
I am a bit worried the that the shifting between shimano/sram cogs or the shimano cog to Extender will be difficult due to difference in tooth profile (shift aid design of the teeth)

The 6800 long cage derailleur is compatible with 36t cassettes. I installed one on a trek domane and there was space for even a 38t cassette. Given the bikes hanger is longer than most I can't say it'd fit 38t on other bikes but 36t should be possible.

How about a triple crank. They have 52/39/30 rings I think. A bit heavy though.

He likes the look of a big ring but he loves climbing. Bad combination.

A 46/30 would be better, although not much different since a jump to 30 is just 12%. They are hard to find... Best for him is maybe a 44/33/22 mtb triple. Relatively large big ring that looks good, and with an 11-28 cassette he can still climb steep grades. It wouldn't work well with brazeon fd's or ultegra 6800 shifters. Probably need a 6703 front left shifter. Anyway...

Max out the rear derailleur first with a 36t. It's probably enough.

There are no shimano 11 speed tripple shifters. Mixing shifter would look ugly.
I tried to convince him to get campagnolo athena tripple but my father is a shimano guy.

I am pretty sure the 36T will work (perhaps with reversed B screw or an additional washer; worst case a road link)

He does not really 'need' a 36 T ( last year he did the Koppenberg with 32T rather smoothly and he only weighs 68 kg)
He just likes super smooth pedalling and why not?

I would not like 46/30 (50% difference between the rings) annoying if you have to shift frequently on the Belgian "bergs".
To have the same top gear that would require a 13T 1st cog. To my knowlegde there are no cassettes in 11 speed that start with 13 (except miche but i believe the thickness of the cogs is different to shimano)

Start to tempt your father with the benefits of low weight+climbing and he might become more flexible with these "arbitrary" defined requirements.

Carrying pie chainrings and giant cassettes up mountains is a "heavy" price for looks.

a tiagra 4703 left hand shifter does not look too out of place with a right hand 6800 ultegra imho.

Pretty the same with 50/34...
I have Rotor 3D+ crankest with 46/30 spidering, 429+144g. With an Sram 11-28 cassette: close ratio, low gears and still the 16 teeth cog.

That looks like a nice alpine setup. Something I would consider if I were to build up a bike but my father bought a canyon with 0 possibilities for changes.

I bought a Gearoop direct-mount chainring from cycletaiwan.com last year.
