How did it happen? During a ride?

Have you tried popping it back in?

I have a similar looking spring on my brakes and the spring is not attached at the end points because they need to "float" on the spring. It should (afaik) only be attached at the middle.

Judging from the scratch marks in your picture it looks like it's been moving sideways. I would try to center it and see if the clamp has some way of tightening at the middle of the spring.

(I don't have fibulas, just my quick assessment from looking at the pic.)

No not on a ride luckily. Just noticed it was frayed while cleaning them.
I have before pushed it back in, i reckon to much centering and to much pressure has damaged it.
Now it has snapped off.
Now thinking can i ride without a front brake, really want to ride to the TDU tomorrow and not on the spare bike.ImageImage

Admire your determination...if not your sense of self preservation

Yeah the forecast just said 33c. Warming up later in the week.
So your saying it's not a good idea to ride without a front brake. Lol.

The carbon springs can break, they can break if you take your wheel off and the brake is closed. I always put foam in the brake to keep that from happening when I have the wheel off and boxing the bike up for traveling.

The carbon springs can be ordered and replaced pretty easily.

I'll email THM later and order a few. Last time they sent me a part for free quite quickly. Now I know the proper name that will help. Appreciated.

Can you use the spring from your rear brake on the front?
This may sound a bit odd but it’s just a piece of material that tensions, you could take the broken piece to a diy store etc and see if you can find something that will work until your replacement comes. I’m sure you could find something. Piece of coat hanger etc . Long as it’s stiff and flexible and fits it will work .

Why not swap in a serviceable front brake (either a spare or from your other bike) to get the bike back on the road? Let's you ride the 'good' bike still just slightly heavier.

Yeah i took the Ultegra brake of my spare bike and fitted that.
Good idea on using another material. Coat hanger might actually work.
I really don't know how to get the broken carbon spring out. Can't see how to release it. If someone could tell me how i would be most grateful.

If you are going to fit some other spring, please do not actually use a coat hanger. That steel is nowhere near spring temper and it will, at best, quickly deform and provide no benefit, or worse, fail and puncture a tire or something. Find some proper spring-tempered wire in stainless and use that if want to ditch the carbon spring.

that's what Cane Creek called it.

Remembering the shoddy build up problems you had with the bike, its probably been caused by poor or repeated centring of the brake.

I hate to be the one telling you this as I am one that can't really speak, but......... You bought boutique US$1100+ pair of carbon fiber brakes and a little piece broke off. Please, no coat hanger or any other ghetto repairs. Call THM and get the replacement part. It will time to get to you and you will have to do a bit of work to get it to work, but in the end you end up with what you paid for. Sucks that it happened right before a ride where you wanted to parade your abby, but it is what it is.......

Best of luck bud!! :beerchug:

PS: document with pict the replacement process. You are not the first nor will be the last to have this happen to. Nice to see it done!!
