Did I just kill my Di2?

Here's what happened... built my bike, a Shiv TT with Di2 towards the end of summer 2017. I rode it in a few TT's at the end of the season and then had a handful of training rides on it over the fall. This is my first bike with Di2, so I'm a rather inexperienced user. Never the less, I did quite a bit of research and put together the system myself to fit my bike. I'm using the latest Internal battery and the latests wireless transmitter, so that I can pick up the ant+ and bluetooth signals. I used the Shimano E-Tube app a few times in later summer and early fall, and it always seemed to work, then about mid-Oct. it stopped working. I figured something within the app just needed an update and eventually Shimano would fix it. Today, I tried it and sure enough a new update for the app downloaded and everything seemed great. I connected my phone via bluetooth to the wireless transmitter and it told me that the battery, and all of the shifter units (both aero extension units and brake shutter units) needed updating. I hit update the battery.... it was updating and then seemed to freeze at 59%. It was literally stuck there for 10 minutes, doing nothing. I closed the app and restarted. It told me that it was updating the battery again. Once again, it froze. Now, I can't connect and the system seems dead. If I pedal the bike and ask it to shift, nothing. If I connect the charger, no lights, nothing. If I try to connect via the app... it keeps saying that there is no Bluetooth signal. Any help? I'm sure I could bring it to my local shop and have them hook it up via the hardwire, and if that's the only option, then so be it... but I was hoping that someone might have a fix I could do now. Disconnect wire from battery for one minute and reconnect it
probably bt signal was lost and one of your di2 components now have incomplete di2 firmware

Shimano SM-BCR2 - this usb box is more suitable for home updating (using pc)

If disconnecting doesn't work, you will likely have to go to a bike shop and have them hook up the SM-PCE1 device to revive the battery.

OK...pulled the plug from the battery for a minute and it seems to have at least reset the system and is allowing me to re-connect the app. It said the battery had incomplete firmware and it is now over-writing the firmware. Hopefully, it doesn't freeze again. I'm just gonna let it go for a while and see what happens. Thanks guys.

OK, so the app did connect and the firmware was almost all the way updated and then the app crashed. I ended up having to pull the plug 2 more times. It did finally overwrite the incomplete firmware on the battery though and then allow me to update everything else in the system, just fine. Now, I've got my laptop plugged in, charging the battery because it was almost dead. I guess that's not too bad considering the last time I charged it was when I built it in the beginning of August and its been sitting since mid-October.

Are you on a mac and can't use etube? Lots of horror stories like yours about the bluetooth.

Yes... I'm on a mac. Yes, the bluetooth seems a bit sketchy.

Not much at all. I think that was potentially causing problems as well.

That’s what I think also.


Shimano doesn’t say anything about that but for the Apple products for example no update if the battery is not at least 50%.

Having heard a lot of tales of woe with the Bluetooth capacity of DI2 it sounds like it might be best to avoid it altogether and do firmware updates with the PCE1 or the BCR2.

UPDATE :: with a full charge on the system now, everything seems to be working just fine. It definitely seems like its a good idea to keep the battery charge topped up if you plan on using the wireless connectivity and the app.

Where do you have your wireless unit?

The wireless unit is hidden inside the frame... in line, between the shifters and an internal junction box. This is the wiring diagram.
