Rim tape for tubed/tubeless with latex/butyl
Moderator: robbosmans
I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find a thread with valuable feedback.
Correct me if I'm wrong, tubeless tape can be used with latex/butyl tubes. Ideally, I want something for both appications, e.g. (tubed and tubeless).
I'm considering veloplugs, Velox cotton tape, Stan's notubes and Boyd tubeless www.boydcycling.com/shop/accessories/tubeless-tape
Any pointers?

Tubeless tapes are really just generic strapping or masking tapes.
I use this green powder-coating masking tape on my wide road rims. It's thinner and easier to install bubble-free than Stan's. It's also thicker and less prone to splitting at the valve hole than Velocity Velotape.

I used Gorilla tape on my MTB rims for years with no problems, sometimes 3M. In high humidity and heat Stans tape won't stick at all. DT Swiss seems good too. Anything non porous seems to work well, but you need to up the quality as you up the pressure.
For tubeless? Not really
No way that "Velox cotton tape" will work for tubeless settings. Above the others tapes mentioned you can also use for tubeless settings "electrical tape", Tesa tape 4289, 3M tape 8898 or Schwalbe tubeless tape. I will not use Veloplugs for tubeless because you shall be lucky when it seals good enough for the high pressure with road tires.mpulsiv wrote:I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find a thread with valuable feedback.

Stan’s is Tesa 4289. Old ENVE and HED tape is Tesa 4298. Velocity Velotape is 3M 8898 (or very similar.)
It’s worth seeking out the 60-72ft rolls of unbranded options from Amazon or other sources unless you want to pay 8x as much for some strapping tape.

I initially did that as it was supplied with a set of Enve M60's but the first time I had a flat that sealant could not handle, well that was a workout as the adhesive seeped from the edges, left a gluey mess on the rim, not to mention it adhered to the tires, making it very difficult to get the bead off to put in a tube. Since swapped to DT Swiss tape and even used it on a non-tubeless Zipp 303 FC with Michelin latex tubes, but be sure to double/triple layer if running high pressures (> 90 psi).

I tried Gorilla tape but ended up not liking it. There was air pressure loss over a few days to a level that made me suspect it wasn't strictly airtight plus it left a gluey mess on the rim when removed. That was my experience.

Sounds like Veloplugs or Velox cotton tape will be fine for tubed application. I will hold off on tubeless application until ready to convert. Is SILCA platinum tape overrated? https://silca.cc/products/platinum-tubeless-rim-tape
These Veloplugs don't look flushed. Cover up Veloplugs with electrical tape?

I believe that SILCA platinum tape looks thin like the Schwalbe Tubeless tape with but the last one you can wrap only one layer for road rims.!

All branded tapes are overrated. They’re just generic strapping / masking tapes that you can buy in larger reels for less money elsewhere.mpulsiv wrote:Sounds like Veloplugs or Velox cotton tape will be fine for tubed application. As much as I dislike to read reviews on Amazon, some feedback was valuable.
"Modern rims are starting to use the tubeless rim with a deep channel in the center. Veloplugs will not fit in 9mm deep channel"
The top of the red veloplug is 13mm x 9.5mm.
The top of the yellow veloplug is 17.5mm x 12mm.
Back to basics to order rim tape.

For Veloplugs I used a small metal rod and rolled it all over the plug in different directions under hard pressure to really flatten it. You might get a puncture with any edges sticking out. In my experience it's a big bang if the plug nips a tube - not good. This happened to me when re-inflating some latex tubes before a ride, which is never the best start to the day. Take your time and do a really thorough job.
I've heard of people taping over Veloplugs, but isn't weight the only reason they exist?
