Travel road frames
Moderator: robbosmans
This is one of these topics where search just doesn't work, so bear with me if there is a topic out there .
What are good travel road bike options? I am thinking about a frame that fits in a small case that can be checked without extra cost.
I'm aware of:
- Rob English frames (really elegant!): e.g., (http://www.englishcycles.com/custombikes/joshuas-fgc/)
- Ritchey break away series (though geometry doesn't work so well for me: https://ritcheylogic.com/frames/road)
- Any steel or TI manufacturer comfortable with S&S couplers: http://www.sandsmachine.com/
- Santana Z Couplers to use on steel or TI: http://santanatandem.com/Techno/TravelTandemTech.html
Anything else I am missing? I really like Rob English's design it looks super elegant.

You have all the names I can think of, and I also think that English has the best design.
For a bespoke, I was also thinking of a Santana coupler (or Ritchey) joining the chain stays to the bottom bracket and bolts for the seat stays at the top and bottom; having stout chain stays allows the seat stays to be minimal/redundant (another English design!).

Less is more.

Thanks for the inputs. The major downside about English frames at the moment is the wait period . I am also tall (6'7"), so steel isn't naturally my first choice - weight, potentially more flexy, etc.
Wondering if anybody has had couplers added to an existing carbon frame. I have a frame that I will ride less in the future and that could serve for a mod.

I'm not sure how comfortable you'd be with S&S couplings on carbon and I"m not sure they even work unless the carbon is round and a standard size.
I've had an Independent Fabrications steel S&S bike and currently have a Moots. My wife has a Seven. All have worked well and are pretty easy to pack. A friend who's about your size has a Zinn - might be something for you to consider since you're so large and he specializes in large bikes. IIRC, my friend's Zinn has two couplers per tube so that the frame can fit into the standard S&S case.

this is a quality build and I had the pleasure to try and follow it around some routes in the Pyrenees last year
Its owner may be along to give you his view....
