Probably the least weight weenie question ever posted here, but worth a shot.

I need to get a step through bike for purely indoor use on Zwift. (It's for an older woman, with limited mobility). The trainer, a flux, is already purchased so a 10 or 11 speed is needed.

Cheapest I saw so far was a Scott Silence, at £1100. Nearly double what I was hoping to spend.

All budget ones seem to be 7 speed.

Ideas?

Really depends on where you are...in Europe, Decathlon is hard to beat.

Oh yeah, I'm in Europe.. well, at least for a while anyway (the UK :D)

Going to take a look through Decathlon now.

My Mom has just had a knee replacement and is in her mid 70s. She uses an indoor exercise bike with a very easy to step through frame.

Surely you buy a budget 7 or 8 speed bike and re-build it with better 10/11 equipment if 10/11 speed is life or death. But not sure why it would be in this situation.

7 speed should be fine with turbo training. Even one speed is fine - if you can control the resistance on the trainer itself you don't even need gears. Might be easier just to buy a trainer with variable resistance.

Since you're in the UK, you could get one of these and upgrade to entry level 11 speed MTB parts. It will still be well under your intended budget.

Buy a cheap used 7, 8 or 9 speed bike on ebay

(I use a 8 speed bike on my turbo trainer, a Tacx Neo)

Thanks guys, I actually thought the limitation here was both the frame and the driver on the Flux itself. Didn't think the Flux could take a 7 speed cassette, and didn't think you could put a 10 speed on a 7 speed bike frame due to distance between the dropouts. Just didn't really know so was playing it safe.

How did you get that 8 speed onto the Neo TonyM? Is it as simple as throwing on a bunch of spacers?

Yepp 8 speed Shimano on my Taxc Neo. Works perfectly.

Actually Tacx told me it is not possible but I just added a spacer in the freehub of the Neo and it works fine!

This news pleases me!

If I can make a cheap 7 speed work right off the bat with some spacers then I'm sorted :D

If a 7 speed cassette can be installed on a 11 speed freehub with some spacer, then I am pretty sure it will work (like for me the 8 speed on my Neo)
