Building up a new bike which will spend vast majority of time in flat areas, but may be used for the occasionally multi day, hilly charity ride.

Any issues running Campy 11-25 cassette with Medium Cage (bike has long 415mm chainstays) and occasional 12-29? Or would I be better off short Cage here (unlikely to run a 32T on this bike).

No issues with a 25t cassette, but expect chain slap in that mode if the chain is cut to accomodate the 12-29.

I swap between a 12-25 and 12-29 on Chorus med cage derailleurs, on 2 bikes. No issues.

Medium cage all the way. The only downside is a tiny bit of extra weight. The longer cage just deals with the chain better. And with certain set-ups it will shift better and not just at the end of the cassette with the big cogs.

For 23t-26t cassettes you shouldn't really choose medium cage.

Sure it works just as 32t sometimes works on a small cage derailleur. Most people would be ok but riding enough time they'll notice that one end of the cassette block shifts better than the other end. It's because of mismatched cassette/derailleur.

Having a dilemma of groupset build for my Caad12, so trying to decide on this topic..

My LBS have Non HO Short Rear Deral. on stock, and is same price as HO (Short or Medium).

I use 12-29 cassette as my ideal one (11s Chorus, all other Record), i do a lot of clibming and have 4W/Kg FTP at a moment.. In last season i really did not feel that i have 32cog, but maybe will try in the future.. Both of my bikes (C60 and Caad12), have 405 chainstay and are rim brake version.

So which one to pick for same price?

HO vs NonHO? and Short vs Medium?

Which will be better for Rim Brake fames i have and short chainstays on both bikes (405mm)

Graeme, the Campagnolo rep who posts here occasionally, has said that the medium cage derailleur actually shifts a 12-29 better than the short cage rear derailleur.

Thanks.. And two more questions

1. Can someone compare 53/39 11-32 Potenza Ultra Torque vs Record 52/36 12-29 (Chorus cassete)

a). In weight difference (is it 300 gm weight difference ? )

b) Gear Ratio difference.. 52/36 12-29 for me it's perfect.. But thinking to buy a Potenza 53/39 11-32 , so thinking how difference will be vs my 52/36 12-29?

I can't comment on weight difference.

You can compare the gear ratios at BikeCalc.com. See chart attached/below. I assume your concern is lightest gear. 39x32 is 1.22. 36x29 is 1.24. So you'd get a wider gear range, though the jumps at the top of the cassette would be larger.

FWIW -- I'm building up a new 12 speed SR bike, and am speccing it with the 11-32 (vs 11-29) for only 6 gram penalty but using 36/52 (rather than a compact).

I can confirm this experience. I just built up my new Potenza 11 speed bike with medium cage. My Potenza medium cage definietly shifts a 12/29 better than my Record short cage. It just seems to manage the chain better on the larger cogs. Running a 12/27 on the medium cage Potenza setup now, and it's shifting just as well as the 12/29. I haven't tested a 11/25 yet.

Thanks WinterShade for ur reply..

As a mentioned having a dilemma at a moment...

Potenza vs Record/Chorus mix (Record shifters, Crankset, Rear Short Cage Deral, Chorus Front Deral and brakes).

My other bike is Colnago C60 with Campy Record 52/36. Im using this with 12-29 cassettes (having two of them), and three wheelset i have (Shamal Ultra, Bora 35 and Bora 50 both tubs). Very nice to switch wheels easely...

If i go Potenza the problem is i cant specify the gearing.. Only option is 53/39 11-32 (which for climbing 39/32 is almost same as 36/29). .Bug big jumps in te middle of cassete and i dont need 11 at all.. Also if i want to change wheels between two bikes, the fact that i have two 12-29 as my favourite, and if i need to use 11-32 on Potenza, changing wheels between bikes will mean changing cassetes as well..

If i use 12-29 with 53/39, i'll definetely miss one gear as i live in hilly area..

Or just use each bike with favourite wheels per bike...

If i specify Chorus with spare chain but without cassette (since i have two of them), the price difference with Potenza (including cassette and extra pair of brake pads for carbon) will be: 366 eur

If i specify Mix Record/Chorus (Record shifters, Crankset, Short Rear Deral, and Chorus Brakes and front deral), with spare chian and without cassette, the price difference with Potenza will be: 435 EUR

Still dont know how to treat CAAD12 i bought (since i decide to bought to test a little lower stack compared to my C60, and also to be my winter/rain/trainer bike, but if i like it enough will be on same level with riding freqency as my C60), so cant decide which compromise to make...

How u compare Potenza vs Record? How heavier is it? I expect to be 250 gm difference, since most of the weiht is in crankset..

Another negative for potenza is PowerShift vs Ultra Shift, and also Chorus/Record are servicable, while Potenza is not...

Have to decide quickly :)

You can buy a Potenza crankset in 52/36 and it is 100% compatible with the 12-29 Chorus cassette.
