Tune Gum Gum in an S-Works Tarmac fork

Has anyone tried this combo, or have much experience with the Gum Gum expander? I have one leftover from a headset that I purchased and it doesn't make sense on that bike (Gunnar steel road bike). The standard Specialized expander plug is pretty substantial and obviously they don't approve of using others but I want to know if the steerer actually requires that extra support.
