Hello Guys,

I just registered to this forum though I have lurker around for quite a while.

I am getting my first powermeter and I've settled on a Power2Max + Rotor3D cranks. I currently own a tarmac with ultegra 6800 crankset and I could either keep the chainrings and use the 4-hole shimano version of P2M (and save myself $100) or go for the 5-hole and get new chainrings. The ultegra crankset is rather new, so I reckon I could sell it to make up for part of those $100 I'd pay extra, but is it worth the hassle?

I am worried about future proofing of 4-hole shimano since the newer DA9100 and R8000 don't seem to be backward compatible so the 5-hole seems like a safer bet in case I need replacement chainrings due to wear in the future... what are your thoughts?

Go for the 4-hole Shimano set up.

I am leaning towards that, but out of curiosity, is it not likely that the future 105 will have a crankset similar to the current DA9100 and R8000, making it way harder to find replacement chainrings?

Shimano rings are still the gold standard for shift quality. I actually am waiting for a 4 hole power2max at the moment that is due at the end of the week. I originally ordered a 5 bolt and decided I'd rather buy the Shimano rings because they are just that much better. Also according to power2max their spider is compatible with both 9000/R9100 style rings. I think they are only not backwards compatible on Shimano cranks due to the special bolt covers.

I have recently purchased the p2m type s 3d with praxis buzz rings. Running it with 6800 di2, it works. Previously I was running a p2m classic 3d with rotor rings. I changed the the rings for a while to Shimano, and whilst it worked perfectly, it just looks horrible. Granted, it's about function over form, but everyone likes their bikes to look nice, no?

Back to the type s, the 3d with the praxis rings, works as well a Shimano in IMO, and they just look right together too.

Thanks for the replies guys... Power2Max really needs to update their website in regards to compatibility, it is not clear at all...

Also, naylor... how did you fit the 4-hole shimano on the p2m?

It was my p2m classic and it was Shimano 5 bolt. They work great, but the aesthetic is not great.

Can anyone confirm the difference in shift quality/feel om the DuraAce rings vs Praxxis?

The looks tells me to go for Praxxis, but is very happy with the shifting on my DA rings.

Praxis is good, maybe even great. The Shimano are on another level though, and I can shift no matter how low my cadence or poor technique on mech. Its comparable to shifting a rear cog.

Praxis chainring is quite good.
But to beat Dura-ace chainring in shifting, you'll need Wickwerks chain ring, Praxis is not going to match it.

Pay some weight penalty going for Wickwerks chain rings though

My NGeco just showed up today. The 9100 rings don't look too bad with Rotor cranks because the rings are darker than the 7900/9000 rings and they start black near the bolts.

For sure, I'll get some up after work today.

Found this blog, must admit that if I already had 9100 rings I would definately go for the Shimano 4 hole. Downside is if you don't have them you will have to add in the region of 160 euro onto the cost of the power meter. But, it could be worth it!
