I definitely prefer the XT shifters. I don't like how easy it is to get two gears with XTR's multishift. And where I live, every trail is a rock garden, so XT derailleurs make replacement costs a little more tolerable. Hard for me to even consider XTR. You can get more bang for your buck spending the money elsewhere.

that is a good point. with mtb, there is a higher risk of derailleur damage. can't see the justification of the higher cost
