Apparently the new, high end Bontrager caliper are much better than the older ones or still specced on lower end 2018 bikes. but there’s no getting past the Shimano actuation ratio, and unless brakes are designed specifically for them (Shimano calipers) then you’re screwed.

Do i understand correctly that you're saying the Bontrager Speed Stop Pro (2018 SLR) are significantly better than the Bontrager Speed Stop (2017 SLR) ?

looking at perhaps picking up an new old stock 2017 SLR, so would be interested in peoples experiences with the non-pro Speed Stop, and how they compare with DA/ULT calipers - both with shimano shifters and etap.

Aussie term. “Taking bets”.

My money is on it being an honest 6.95kg.

Yes. Two totally different beasts. The Speed Stop Pro’s are apparently light years ahead.

Built yesterday, rode today for 60km.

First impressions: Very stiff, fantastic drive but really, really comfy. Sublimely so. Keep pedalling over train tracks stiff. Very lovely and stable to ride at speed or even snails pace climbing.

708g frame (H2 56cm) and 306g fork.

Complete build 6.95kg.

Ultegra R8050 complete build, internal cables in bar.
44cm RL aero alloy bar
Bontrager Pro stem (with adapters for stuff)
Montrose Elite saddle
Fulcrum Quattro Carbon wheels
Vittoria Corsa G+ 25mm tyres
Normal tubes
RL bottle cages
Garmin Vector S with Ultegra Pedal adapters

Remember, I built this for a Clydesdale super-Fondo machine.

Pics to follow.

I remember predicting 6.8kg without pedals. Which pedals do you have?

Garmin Vector S, 1st gen, with Ultegra Pedal adapters.

Yup, you were close. It’s probably got 100g of extra Di2 wiring....!

I overestimated by about 200g, so not that close.

Gorgeous! How comfortable was the front end? Did you find there was excessive road buzz transmitted through the front?

That’s actually a good point to ask. Coming from a Domane, with isozone bars and gel pads, to an aero alloy bar, I found the front disturbingly comfortable. On really rough sealed tar, you got a bit of vibe but not enough to really be concerned about. The bike just seems to soak it up. Very impressive.

Very good. The Quattro Carbons were the first to get the new treatment with the 3K weave on the braking surface and the herringbone grooves, but with the Fulcrum/ Campagnolo red pads the direct mount brakes are fantastic. Simple to set up (one screw centering) and good lever feel.

Certainly makes even a heavy guy question disc brakes.

Again after seeing photos of one spectacular rim brake carbon clincher failure and several people on shiny new bikes (like the Tarmac SL6) stopped on the side of Deer Creek Rd. waiting for their cooked wheels to cool down, I don't question disc brakes at all.

Holy crap. let me rephrase: If I lived where there were significantly long descents, then I'd have them. but it all seems uphill from my place. off topic though I've seen a lot of open mould wheels, even around here, fall to bits.
