The newer derailleurs simply need to be placed in a different position in space. They can get there in two ways... 1) by using the removeable “B-link” attached to a regular hanger, or 2) through a Direct Mount hanger which places it in the exact same place but without the need for the B-link. The shifting should be absolutely identical. The only advantage to the Direct Mount hanger would be in cases where your standard hanger is very soft, affectionately described as “made of cheese”. In that case there could be some unwanted flex which could affect the ultimate shifting performance. The trouble with having only a DM hanger is that it would preclude using derailleurs that don’t use the DM specification.
I also suspect that some manufacturers may produce a DM hanger which actually places the derailleur a little further back than spec’d by Shimano due to difficulties in wheel removal on some frames with the new derailleurs. This would result in slightly less crisp shifting but easier rear wheel removal.

On the Venge PDF it lists it as.... a Tarmac hanger, this looks to be the right part number.

So i guess the 1000000 question now is this...
Is that the stock hanger that comes on the bike or is this in fact the long reach direct mount version pictured. Anyone have a contact at the big S that could ask??

There she is!
It should be but maybe not,
If you look at the spec of the normal rear drop out you'll see that the allowable position are very large. Manufacturer can put rd somewhere in the ball park. Some frame have shorter hanger, some are longer even without drop out extender, some put more forward and vice versa.
Remember when Trek revise rd hanger position to mount further backward to ease wheel removal after the release of 9100 series?
Spec for direct mount drop out is a lot more tightly controlled. Shimano limit allowable place to mount rd compare to wheel axle in a much closer range on direct mount hanger. Normal dropout+link may not put your rd in that space. But Direct mount hanger have to, if they follow Shimano's spec.
