Probably sees minutes of action at low speeds per short hill climb season. Can see his thinking there.

He's looking at it like it's a disposable item. eBay some light, cheap tat, drill it, inspect it after the single effort, then maybe use again at the next event if it's still intact. Wouldn't be quick to assume he's dense, could be smarter than all of us put together.

If he was out training on it hard I'd get out my Mr. Sensible hat but it's all good I'm sure. Those guys are a world apart from regular roadies. Weight-weenies but with a purpose. Kudos

I'm not sure how smart he is, I doubt that these holes will even save him a 1/10 of a second.

Weight savings are additive. And will eventually add up to a second or two. Which is podium or not for those guys.

Unless of course you're saying he's just riding the fork by itself, you know, like a pogo stick, up the hill?

Why not? The center section of the steerer should see very little stress, since it is supported by bearings on each end.

Just the opposite. Because there are bearings on both sides of the holes acting as fulcrums, that portion of the steerer tube will be flexed whenever load is applied to the fork.

Seen some awesome stuff (Godzuki) but this is just retarded. Drilling your seat tube would be safer...

I can't believe that anyone would think this would be an ok idea - so little benefit.

Not advocating modifying the steer tube, but seems like a better approach would have been to have a shop with a CNC Machine, create long, thin flutes, instead of the multiple stress risers from drilling that many holes.
