Since you find SRM to be too expensive, I would go Power2max. Otherwise keep the standard campagnolo crank and try P1 pedals.

Although anecdotal, I continue to hear mixed reviews about stages reliability and it seems to be a hassle.

Well, thanks all, ordered an SR crank. Seemed a shame to have the shifting bits and a chorus crank.
Will add pedals or a stages later.
