I'd recommend going smaller, if that is the only choice. Otherwise find a frame that fits correctly, or have a custom frame made. Riding a compromise is just that, a compromise.

Wouldn't this depend on the size of the frame? Modern 50-52cm frames generally come standard with a 90mm stem.
