Clarify Sram Red crankset weights (different year/model) - 520gr crank!
Moderator: robbosmans
Hey! I have to ask the experts this question because the information of claimed weights posted by sram and by online sellers confuse me. Maybe there is someone that has a clear picture of the options.
I'm looking for a lightweight bb30 compact crankset (170), becuase I ordered a new frame with BB30 bottom bracket.
(As you know there is a nice potential for some weight saving with bb30. It would be a waste to install just a simple cheap FSA Gossamer BB30 @ 750gr. It wouldn't be much lighter than my old simple BSA setup.)
I've seen claimed weights between 520 and 640 grams depending on the year/chainring.
I am pretty sure that a red22 compact bb30 crank is 520gr. It is also very expensive. I see many 10speed cranks for sale for much less, looking identical. I read people write that red10 and red22 is almost the same, bla bla.
Force10 also is very similar to red with the carbon spider that they later replaced in Force22 and made it heavier.
Sram red has some older 10 speed versions with carbon spider. Dating from 2011 I think. When did red make this big jump to 520gr? How heavy was it before? Is it when the silver chainrings came into the picture?
So which is the first 520gr crank made by sram? Does anything older come close? Force10? Red10? 2011,2012,2013,2014? (Were talking compact cranks)
Which year is the lighter version produced. It seems any sram carbon spider is not automatically 520-550gr. Am I wrong?
The frame cost me just 250$ and is nice and light. Obviously I don't want to spend too much to come under 600gr for the crankset. I will spend whatever is necessary though.
I'm not limited to Sram either. Seen some Fsa sl-k light at slightly over 600gr. Kouta CK-30 also very light. Not bad...
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

The Red cranks became very light when they introduced the Exogram technology where the spiders are carbon and hollow. See the links below. The year is 2012. AFAIK the Red Exogram 10-speed and the Red 22 cranks are identical except the chainrings. There's a bit more machining on the Red 22 chainrings for a seven gram weight savings. Functionally there's no difference between the 10-speed and 11-speed chainrings. I'm running the 10-speed chainrings on Shimano Di2 9070. Here are the weights of my 2012 Red 10-speed.
110BCD GXP 2012 Red crank arms only 401g.
50 10-speed ring 127g.
50 11-speed ring 120g.
34 10-speed ring 28g.
34 11-speed ring 28g.

Has someone weighed the sram red exogram crank in bb30 version? How much lighter is that compared to the gxp?
I have an offer to buy a specialized crank (w/o chainrings) for little over 100$. It's only 383gr. (172.5 bcd110)
Is that lower than the sram red exo bb30 you think?

Fsa sl-k bb30 130bcd with chainrings is 600-610gr (thats the older version with exposed bolts, not the "pitched tent" looking version). You say it's around 388gr without rings and bolts (bcd110?). I dont understand the weight difference then of nearly 210-200gr. Rings and bolts should come to 140-160 no?
Red 22 bb30
110bcd 50/34 in 165mm
516g.
Definitely potential to drop more weight using more exotic chainring.
