Hi All

Is it worth swapping out an Si for an SISL2? Weight difference and stiffness?

Yes, but my reasoning has nothing to do with stiffness and/or weight and everything to do with the redesign. 109mm spindle on Sisl2 vs 104mm spindle on Sisl. Wavy washer is on the non-drive side versus drive side. Gone is the shoulder on the spindle which prevented getting a decent chainline for DA9000 to work as it was designed.

I would think the newer Si cranks are perhaps 109mm. Or at least the one with BB30A 73mm shell?

Actually then, I am not at all sure if the new Sisl's have a design change. I thought there was only Sisl and Sisl2, and that if it didn't say Sisl2 it was first generation stuff and had the 104mm spindle. I may be wrong there so I would check that out. I am going on my experience with a 2012 or so Hollowgram Sisl crank versus the newer Sisl2 Hollowgram crank.

The si (not SL) is a lower spec version with an 8 arm spidering instead of 10. I can't find any references to weight differences. Mine don't look as if they are made in 2 parts and bonded like the sisl2.

The Si is an entry level spec 3D forged version, so not bonded like the SiSL/SiSL2
I've been researching hollowgram cranks as I just bought a Hi-MOD and these are the weights I've found posted online

Si-167-170g
SiSL-140g
SiSL2-124g

You can just get a 109mm spindle for SiSL to get the benefit of SiSL2.....

Yeah, but try finding a 109mm spindle these days. And even then the newer profile of the cranks or spider or combo, (can't remember which) means that it ends up not quite "right" anyway. And I forgot what "not quite right" means exactly but may have something to do with q-factor or distance from center for each crank. Probably not a big deal. The hard part would be finding a 109mm spindle I think.
Or are they used in their other cranks now as well? If so, I'll pick one up for a friend of mine who could sure use one.

Quick question for anyone who has installed a SiSL2 crankset. I just got mine off of eBay and I can't for the life of me get the spindle past the first bearing. The spindle doesn't go much past the splines into the bearing. I've tapped (ok, a little more than tapped lol) it with a rubber mallet and it hasn't budged. I'm assuming this is not normal?

You can try putting the spindle in the freezer for a while.

Ok, but my concern is that if that works for install how do I go about removing it if/when I need to?
