chain lube
Moderator: robbosmans
I've used Squirt on my road bikes for years now. You have to re-apply it on a regular basis, and if you do, even a wet ride is OK. BTW, Squirt now has a cold weather version, which I haven't tried, mind you.
On my gravel/wet weather/winter bike I've used Rex's basic chain lube. So far I've been impressed. You don't really need to re-apply it, unless you clean the chain. Compared to Squirt anyway. So far, I've maybe been a bit over eager with the application, because my cassette does have plenty of that blank gunk between the cogs. In the scheme of things, however, that's not a problem.
That race day spray use pic by Eurperg is very impressive. I ride in Finland as well, and your chain staying virtually clean is very little short of a miracle in wet conditions. Having said that, the stuff does cost an arm and a leg... Sometimes it can be worth it though.

I've been using bike mix for roughly 3 months now. Have to rate it up there with rock n roll gold. Runs really quietly and the drivetrain stays really clean (even with crappy winter commute miles). Had the guy who created it in the shop about a month ago and i had a good chat with him about the science. Seemed really switched on.silvalis wrote:Anyone used Ride Mechanic Bike Mix before? or Bike Milk?

Having a go at bike mix. Degreaser component seems a lot harsher than RnR Gold. Not really sure about it yet.
I tried the syrup for about 2 weeks and it was hands down the quietest lube I've ever used. Ran a bit dirty for me but i got about 350km out of one application even riding through several thunderstorms.

I use Bike mix. It can be messy if you over do it but works really well. I actually poured off about half of the wet component to make it a bit more waxy and have one squirt bottle with the drier mix and one that's more wet lube for crappy looking days.
Anyone thinking Wend Wax actually works...

I've been using Lilly Lube. Lasts long, makes for a quiet chain, and doesn't attract much dirt, penetrates the chain well and has EP additives. However, for dusty mountain bike trails it doesn't last more than a ride. I switched back to Squirt for dusty conditions.

I guess contamination is the worst enemy. So does that also mean, best results one can achieve is with a chain that has the least sticky lube?

About 3 months ago I was introduced to Rohloff.
Thoroughly impressed. Expensive but a small amount goes a long way. No dirt sticking to it even though it is an oil based lube.

You're not wasting it because it's all solvent. The actual lubricious content in RnR Gold takes up like 1/20th of the bottle. :p
I like RnR Gold, but it's not the best bang for the buck as a result of its super low surface tension and the fact that there's really not that much actual lube in the bottle.
What do you use?TobinHatesYou wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 5:26 am

I buy the RnR Gold in the biggest bottle available. A big bottle lasts a long time so it isn’t expensive to use at all. One drop per link every 300 miles. And I also add fine moly powder to the lube so I get extra lubrication from the moly.

I tend to put my fine molly places other than my chainpdlpsher1 wrote:I buy the RnR Gold in the biggest bottle available. A big bottle lasts a long time so it isn’t expensive to use at all.
