Can you upgrade to 11 speed with just cassette and shifters

Hello

My current set up is Ultegra 6700 (ten speed). I'd like to upgrade to 11 speed so was wondering if I could do this with new shifters and cassette only. Has anyone tried this successfully? Or do I need to get mechs as well?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Jamie

You need a new chain. You will also almost certainly need a new rear wheel, or a new hub that can be re-laced to your existing rim, or if you just so happen to have a hub that can have it's freehub body upgraded. I don't know about Shimano cable pull differences between 10s and 11s so I can't speak for the rear derailleur.

New right shifter, new chain, new cassette.

Cassette: You can get an Edco Monoblock, or an Ultegra cassette that's been machined for 10sp freehubs- there's someone on ebay offering these.

In case you have Mavic wheels, Mavic 10s freehubs will also fit 11s cassettes.

Generally though, 11s cassettes are too wide for 10s freehubs.

Thanks for the replies

I should have said, I have a Mavic wheel which will take an 11 speed cassette, so that will be fine.

I thought the rear mech might need changing as well- I'll give it a go without though first

The only setup I'm aware of that you can do this is Sram. For example, my TT bike is using 10 speed derailleurs with 11 speed everything else for an 11 speed setup. Shimano and Campy require you to upgrade the whole setup.

I thought that Shimano didn't change the derailleur actuation ratio, mtb 9 speed = road 10 speed = road 11 speed.

Only MTB 10 speed is different.

Do you mind sharing the link to it? I can't seem to find it on eBay or Google. Maybe I'm not searching with the right keywords?

So with my SRAM Red 10 spd, I only need a cassette, chain, and right shifter? If so, that's not too bad. All my wheelsets are 10/11 spd.

SRAM can upgrade only shifters and cassette.
Not true with shimano.
rear D is different, front cable pull is different... it will not work well if it does work at all.
You can re-use your brakes and crankset.
Need chain, cassette, derailleurs and shifters to the best of my knowledge.

I heard they did change it for 11spd but no idea how much or which way.

Apparently they should work

Will Shimano’s 6700/7900 rear derailleurs work with the newer 11-speed 6800/9000 shifters and 11-speed cassettes?

Dear Alex,
Yes, Shimano Ultegra 6800 and Dura-Ace 9000 11-speed shifters and 11-speed cassettes work flawlessly with Shimano Ultegra 6700 and Dura-Ace 7900 10-speed derailleurs. And since the 11-speed levers require substantially less shifting force, you should get a lighter shifting feel as well as an extra gear!

That's cool... it wouldn't be the first time if he was wrong, but I hope he is right.

VN yanked Lenny's reply. Maybe he was wrong. Or maybe Shimano got all pissed off.
