My Reynolds AR29X has insanely loud freehub, on pair with Tune mag 170 and DT Swiss 54T with oil!
2018 Cannondale SuperSix EVO 2 rim size 56 (raw stripped) 6.8kg

I call this type of sound "annoying" (Chris King, DT Swiss 54T, i9 hydra, soul)
Zipp, Tune, Campagnolo is just positively "loud"

FWIW Tune hubs no longer so loud IME - the MAG170 I built up last year on campag is much quieter than the 3T I also have as another set. On Reynolds - the old 46 I have using DT190 have quietened down over the years but were never as loud as that 3T.
Also FWIW more energy lost to noise = less efficiency! (fractionally )
I dont follow. Are you saying louder hubs are less efficient? Imagine two smooth pieces of metal contacting with light oil between them. Noisy but slippery. Pack them with thick grease and you'll have less noise but more friction.
Yes absolutely, simple physics. Things like noise, heat etc is energy generated from friction and lost, ie not propelling you forwards.
(Of course if you pack enough 'thick grease' in it will dampen the noise but also provide friction, making it less efficient, that's another variable beside the point).
What was only a flippant aside, it's not anything that's going to make a noticable difference!

DT Swiss 240 if stock (now 36t ratchet), 180 if upgraded to 46t/54t (18t stock)
White Industry is quite quiet

Hm, weird this one with noise and friction. 2 wheel builders + our favorite Hambini recommended Ti carbon, which i bought.
They're loud, but i don't find them to suffer from hub-drag.
Never the less, interesting to read.

Simple physics if the amount of noise could tell you how much heat and friction was being generated, but it doesn't. The two things are not intrinsically linked.GS100 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 7:34 amYes absolutely, simple physics. Imagine two disc brake bikes riding side by side. One has rotors that are running almost silent, the other howls like a banshee every time the levers are pulled. Which one would you bet has better stopping power?
