If I had it I'd probably get some fiberglass cloth and epoxy and reinforce the area where the transition is and for a couple inches below.

Lighter aero seatpost for Dengfu FM0989 frame?

Posted: Tue Nov 12, 2013 6:51 pm
by dwmark2
I have a Dengfu FM098 frame and it came with an aero carbon seatpost that weighs ~150g. Im looking to replace it with something that is a bit lighter, but can't find anything that would fit its aero shape.

Here is the shape Im refering to:
http://i00.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/459/128/455/455128459_023.JPG

Does anyone know of a good replacement or a place where I could find one?

150g for an aero seatpost (300mm?) is pretty damn light, and I assume that's not even with Ti-hardware?

Just replaced the standard steel bolts on my Planet X Stealth post with Ti, that thing is still closer to 240g...

Heck, a lot of aero ISP posts have 150g just in the topper alone... I'm sure you can tune 10g off your hardware without breaking a sweat.

after reading the thread, i am tempted to buy the frame too... most bike company has moved their factory to china/taiwan...

only a few company are still building their frame locally...

Recently I saw 2 instances of cracked seat tube of FM066 on Velobuild:
http://www.velobuild.com/6-build-photos/5903-cracked-fm066-sl-after-2-rides

The 2 frames in question cracked in similar positions: behind the seat tube and about 12cm down the seat tube.

This seems to be an unusual location of failures, so I removed my seatpost to investigate, and guess what I found:
Image

There's an abrupt transition from a smooth inner wall to a lower "gorge", and the thinner area starts about 11cm down the seat tube, coinciding with the aforementioned cases. My frame has only logged 700km and I 've seen no signs of cracks both inside and outside the seat tube so far, but I'm starting to worry my frame will crack the same way in the future.

My seatpost is cut to 260mm, with insertion depth of 105mm, maybe I should use a longer seatpost to lessen the possibility of cracking?

Has any FM066 user found the same issue of uneven wall thickness of seat tube?

Hi !
I'm the guy who opened the topic on the FM066 cracked frame on Velobuild.
The topic has been deleted on velobuild, so, I hope you won't mind if I give my answer here.

For some reasons, there seems to be a fight between velobuild's moderator and some chinese vendors. I'm not here to blame anyone, let's just say frames like FM066, 98… are not sold there anymore, and every topic about those frames has been deleted by the moderator. Looks like censorship to me, but anyway…

So, yes my frame cracked, and yes, Mark from Honor Bikes did an excellent job, sending me promptly (and for free) the exact same new frame. He didn't even asked me to send my frame back, he only saw the pictures I took and solved my problem.

So, in my opinion, that's quite an excellent service. I have nothing to complain about. Problem solved, and thank you Mark for your work.

Here are a few pictures of my new freshly assembled frame : complete weight is 5.92kg.

It's a very nice ride, I love it. It's hard to tell, because this is actually my first road bike, but I really feel like the bike handles really well, is quite comfy and rigid enough.
Less than 6kg on the scale makes it a good climber, extremely responsive, with fast accelerations. I love it !

How do you know that this frame won't crack like the previous one. I guess you will find out

Well, sorry for being the optimistic type.
But considering the hundreds or thousands of FM066 sold around the world, I don't recall seeing that many problems, so I assume this wast just bad luck.
And even if this was to happen again, the frame has a 2 years warranty from Honor Bikes, their customer service is excellent, and I know Mark will send me a new frame right away, so why bother ?
Worst case scenario : I sell this third frame for about what I paid in the first place, and I get a different (more expensive) brand, knowing now that I finally love road biking. Honestly, I'd really need more to get worried !

I'm all for good cheap frames. Just worried about good cheap frames frequency of failures and warranties associated to those failures.

Thank you for posting here, I was curious about your frame's problem but my post never got past the "censorship" over the Velobuild forum...

Glad you got the replacement from Mark. Since I bought the frame from Miracle Trade, which doesn't have a very good reputaion to honor warranty, I can only keep my finger crossed hoping my frame will hold together just fine like so many FM066 which have survived the trial.

Regarding your defective frame, have you noticed any abnormal bumps or cut marks inside the seat tube?

Hi, metanoize: judging from the plastic cable port covers, I suppose your frame is the earlier version? (front der mount is held by rivets instead of bolts)

Mind if I ask you when you bought the frame and your body weight? Thank you!

It doesn't look finished to me; the cable run exit points don't look like the have any guides and the bottom bracket looks like it's not moulded in.

It's very personal, buy I don't like the cross sections in the tubing either - it almost looks over engineered for no apparent reason?

And the smallest size doesn't look very small. But, of course, no problem unless you are small.
