Weight Weenies

Hi, for the past weak my arches in my feet have been dire while riding and while not the muscle has that lactic acid burn feeling.

I have relatively flat feet.

I can't think why this started, anyone had this problem before? The only thing I can think its from are:

1. Not tightening my shoes enough
2. Speedplay pedal too much float
3. Raised seat 3 mm

Nothing has changed really, I'm using s-works shoes and have been if tht matters and nothing ourside riding has changed. I'll admit I'm hating the pedals these days, could the small contact area be causing problems?

with s-works shoes and speedplays, which have a large contact area, i'd be surprised if there was any perceptible deformation of the shoe sole - i use the same and can't feel anything through the sole

maybe you need more arch support, if you've got flat feet consider seeing a specialist physio who can evaluate what's happening - fwiw i used to be ok with the normal bg insoles, but over time had to change to ones with more support

Try higher arch supports: Specialized green or similar.

Are your feet genuinely low arch or do you have the kind of arch that does not hold its shape with weight on it?

U need spec blue insoles to start with, i think. But better visit the specialist. It ca be wrong cleat position.

Also, reduce excessive float.

So I should try the different specialized insoles with high arch support? The only reason I know I have flat feet is from standing on one of those computer foot machines, but it makes sense I suppose, from looking at my feet the arches do not look very high.

different note, the cold has been playing all sorts of tricks on my feet...perhaps that?

You can set the speedplay cleats to zero float quite easily. it's not the pedals fault, it's more that you don't knw how to set them up.

I suggest to visit a specialized shop so they will tell you which one of their insoles is better for you. But if you have kind of flat feet, the red ones will do very little, and the green ones have a too large arch. I think blue ones are the best ones for you. I receive mine tomorrow hopefully!!!

The speedplays have a larger contact. Plus your shoes are very stiff. Sounds like you have collapsing arches. I would go see a specialist to get some insoles.

Thank you, I will go to the store today or tomorrow and get insoles.

I'm pretty sure the blades are bigger, the speedplays are about 1 1/2 inches across. They may say the pedals on the shoe but to me logically it doesn't make sense. But I admit I should have done more to adjust the cleat but maybe it's just not for me.

Look system is 30 years old, it's out-dated. Speedplay system, for many reasons i don't have the time to write now, are much better. You just have to read all the information available and set them up properly. You also need decent shoes and a decent sole. Speedplay can have from 30º play to 0º play, BUT, you have to set them up properly. Also the platforma is much larger than in look system. You have to set them up properly, spend time researching and be patient. If you have no time or no patient, then you should definitely use the Look system, which is much worse but easier to set up.

@Liggero, you can't generalize like that. The Look system has been around for 30 years because it works.

Now like all contact points it depends on what suits the individual. Search the forums and you'll find people who haven't been able to get on with Speedplays.

Yeah, Speedplay sucks as a company. Their warranty period is a lie.

If your arches are low then the burning might come from too much arch support.

I got green inserts on a punt as were cheap but could not do more than a few minutes without getting pain, whereas the blue ones fit me really well.

As for pedal systems - it does not matter what it is as long as you set it up right/it feels right to you.
