Cervelo groupset advice for new build

Hi all,

Just got my hands on a Cervelo R5 vdw frame :) I need some advice on the groupset; I love the look of the new Red group but the cranks only fit with a shim and I think that could be a pain in the arse in the long run. I am looking to keep things running smooth whilst keeping the weight down. I am also up for some advice on finishing kit; wheels are 50mm matt carbon from yinshun which I hope to upgrade in the future but will have to do for now, and I am thinking all 3t finishing kit, possibly classic bend bars.

How would you build up this frame?

Thanks for any help.

I am going to go with a set of 3d+ and q rings I think. I am also thinking about ergonova team bars and ARX stem but the stripe on these is white and my seatpost (came with the frame) has a grey stripe? I am looking for a airone with the black and red colour scheme as well, I really want this to look right as well as function perfectly.

3T Pro is white stripe, 3T Team is red (or 'Stealth' gloss black option), 3T LTD is grey... so 3T Team bar and stem would work well with a red/black saddle and wouldn't clash at all with the LTD seatpost, IMO.

whilst this is a personal choice, this above is oh so fitting...i must agree.

I've been very happy with my ltd cockpit. The grey would suit perfectly with an AX lightness saddle which has grey logos.

Thanks for all the input so far.

I have sourced one of these Image, which I think is going to look awesome and I am coming round to the red stripe idea. I will probably go for the carbon ergonovas, Red group (minus brakes and chainset) Planet x brakes (black or silver) extralight expander and top cap and Rotor 3D+ cranks +Q Rings.

Any ideas on BB choice? I think I can go for steel or ceramic, but is there really that much in it?

If you decide to go for the red stripes, to match this scheme you would have to change the seatpost for Team version.
Which will add about 60g of the extra weight.
Why not to use Sram BB supplied with the frame?

I like some of your ideas: Extralite stem, streeters.
Unfortunately you can't use standard seatpost clamp with this frame due to the irregular shape of the seat tube at the point where clamp is mounted.

What about Arx Pro stem (white stripe) and LTD Ergonova bars? Not sure they are worth the extra £50 over the normal team carbon bars :noidea:

I didn't know the R5 didn't use a round seatpost clamp. :(

I guess all you can do is run a Ti bolt on the factory clamp. You could always mill out the centre of the factory clamp with a 1/4" end mill and create a slot.

Don't forget to run a fibrelyte carbon chain catcher too.
