New Red crank info, must read! :)

How much space is there between the crank and the ring? Not a huge worry, but if you throw the chain over will it wedge between the crank and ring (since the peg will be in the wrong spot due to the hidden chainring bolt)? Otherwise, seems to be the new budget ww BB30 crank.

I am curious about stiffness as well. Sounds like SRAM has made some needed improvements with the cranks. But for the cost, you can get a Hollowgram SI crank that will be the same weight all in. Not sure the Red is going to be as stiff as the Hollowgram.

The new Red crank is very stiff, much better than the 2011 Red unit, plenty stiff for me at 145#'s. Now the TA ring is fine for me but I would think a 200# sprinter type should get a set of Praxis rings, light and strong.

Sounds like an easy way to shed a bit of weight! I guess we just have to find some rings that are the correct thickness at the hidden bolt location so we don't get runout issues. It probably won't be long before TA/Fiberlyte/etc make rings with movable catchpins so it'll work on this crank.

Though the Sram chainring is pretty heavy compared to others it does have some aero advantage.

I have been trying to look for Hollowgram SI's or SL's but have not had luck finding them sub $500. And with SRAM being <400, that would be a good buy.

Interesting. My Evo has Sram Red compact rings and when I replaced them with Praxis Works rings I weighed the Red rings together and came up with 138g.

I would not say wasting, the new ring shifts great and is the stiffest I've seen, but at 145#'s on an 11# bike I don't need them that stiff, thus the lighter ring(WW you know:)).

The Yaw of the front der doesnt have as much to do with shifting as it does in dealing with chain line. The lift and more firm action is where the shifting benefit comes in


It's also off base to say the new cranks are "a lot" stiffer than the old ones. Theyre not. The old ones were pretty dang good. The thing that most folks are feeling is a much better ring design and a much improved front Der action. That said, I wouldnt hesitate to go to the new praxis rings and cut weight without giving much away (if anything at all) in shifting.

Your right on the crank stiffness thing, I don't think I could flex any crank at 145#'s! Im ordering the Praxis rings also.
