Gold bike chain etiquette?

What is the standard thought about using a gold chain on a bike? I don't see them that often on ww and when they are used people complain to the poster that they should have gone with silver. When is gold ok? Only on a all black/stealth bike?

Its all a matter of aesthetic taste if it should be a bother. Really, a gold coloured chain would look good on the Colnago Master 55th Anniversary Edition, so it doesn't have to be 'stealth carbon' ...

It's a bit on the dirty side. You'll be able so see some of the gold coating wear off after a while.

gold chains are faster.

i find that gold chains look good on a lot of bikes, even if the rest of the color scheme is something entirely different. it's just a bit of bling.

Oddly, though I tend to loathe the whole 'bling' thing, I've never seen a bike which I thought a gold chain looked terrible on - they somehow just seem to work most of the time.
As far as 'etiquette' goes, no one else opinion matters but your own. If you like it, run it... if no, then don't. Hell..if you want to run a pink polka-dotted chain with purple link plates, run it.. bugger 'em all

Gold is a very soft metal, which is why most jewelry is gold-plated.
The tradition of Olympic athletes biting the gold medal they are given stems back to testing to see if it is real gold: miners would take a found nugget and try to bite on it. If they make a mark with their teeth, it's real gold. If their teeth are shattered, it's "fool's gold."

It would make for a very weak chain!

A true diamond cassette would cut through any chain. Most of the world's diamonds are used for industrial cutting purposes & machinery.

Steel has a density of 8g/cm^3, whilst gold is about 19.3g/cm^3, thus:
If you take the weight of a KMC X10SL chain (most common gold one) as being 250g uncut, then the weight of the same chain actually made from solid gold would be about 603.9 grams.. or 1.33lbs..

It would have one advantage though, if you lived in a bad neighbourhood, you'd simply have to remove the chain from the bike and wear it around your neck = instant street cred with the ghetto pimps...

Prend, hmm, I'd take issue with the claim that most jewelry is gold-plated. For jewels gold alloy is used to make it more durable. Oh well, guess it depends if you also count "bling jewellery" ...

@wasser - I was going by sheer volume and quantity of items in the world: most 'gold' jewelry in the world, by volume, is plated.
