Roubaix Speedplay?

Why do some of the riders have these machined out zeros? Surely they aren't as tough as the standard models? Weight saving would be pointless.

Not machined out - just the bodies have been removed. It's for mud/dirt/grime. Allows the springs and cleats to work and clear out the gunk on their own.

If the conditions were muddy I would be far more concerned by the clearance of the 27mm FMB on that first pic.
