Updates about Shimano clicking cog/cassette
Moderator: robbosmans
Was using a cheap non directional one which are usually fine but had obviously connected/released it too many times. When you slowly ran the chain over the higher sprockets you could see it slip/move between the teeth as it released.

on that site 8101 cheaper than 8100 currently, 79.82€ vs 97.68€ill principe wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 8:25 amThe clicking sound was very much a thing on my R8170 groupset, and I´m 100% sure you can find others with the same issue in the "Dura Ace 9200"-thread.AsphaltAddict wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 10:01 pmSo when you use 12-speed Di2, both the "older" model R8100 cassette and the updated R8101 cassette should both work fine, right?
The clicking sound only occurs when the older R8100 is used in a mechanical drivetrain, right?
I'm asking because I have a very good offer on R8100 12-sp cassettes and the R8101 are almost double the price.
I paid 50% more for a 8101, which was a no-brainer after going near mad with the clicking.
Seems like 8101 prices are dropping a bit now https://www.bike-components.de/en/Shima ... vD_BwE&t=b

After close inspection I 'think' the chain is hanging on the tooth because the tooth is too thick to let the chain slide down easily until it gets some pressure to 'pull' it down (and cause a clicking noise). The arrow points out the inner links 'hanging' on a tooth and then cause the gap indicated by the two lines.
I plan to do some needle filing but looking for some help.
- some people seem to have been successful by filing the tooth on the 21T sprocket - I am thinking to file the sides to try and let the inner link drop into position
OR
- other people seem to have success by filing the tooth on the adjacent cog as they have concluded this is 'holding up' the chain due to interference
so - whether to file the 21 cog or the 19 and/or 24 cog
any advice appreciated
Jumping in with another example - I had this issue on the 21T cog on a new 105 7100 11-34 cassette. The clicking noise was clear when riding the bike in both chainrings (50/34) and didn't go away after 300 miles. Bike shop mechanic said they couldn't hear anything unusual so I couldn't warranty it
It was driving me nuts so I bought a new Ultegra 8100 11-34 (couldn't find the 105 version in stock), and this new one doesn't have the issue.

Had the same problem with the 21t cog, i.e., the 4th gear on 11-30 cassette. The noise just pops in after some miles and now it is on and off randomly only when I pedal at a higher rpm. The solution is to swap the 17-19t cog combo with another 11-34 of mine... I think it is because one or two teeth from the 19t is a hair too thick that it would interfere the chain when the chain is on the 21t cog.
Another issue with my 11-34 is that the chain will be consistently picked up by the 12t when I am on 13t unless I widely offset the derailleur that makes almost every other gear noisy as hell. And this problem does not appear on my 11-30 cassette. Very frastruted by this...
Terrible maunfacturing issue by Shimano. They just ignores these sorts of problems along with broken cranksets. And I have just realied they quiettly released the r8101 cassette to replace r8100, the product page is identical, making me wonder why the upgrade if no issue at all.

A bigger chainring can make the chainline even more angled on bigger cogs. I noticed this on my aeroad with a poor 410mm of chainstay and 52-36 chainring. It is considerably louder than my defy with 420mm of chainstay and 50-34 chainring. I guess it is the same reason why 34t chainring can be dead silent but 50t is much noiser...

Is this issue existent at all on the 9200 11-30 cassettes? My current 8100 is fine but I was considering a 9200 for some weight savings and don't want to buy myself a potential problem.

New cassette on trainer and this clicking is from it. Thought it was the new ultegra chain. So annoying!
It's all about the adventure .
How so? The chain leaves the chainring at 12 and 6 o'clock.xiyuwang wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 7:14 amA bigger chainring can make the chainline even more angled on bigger cogs. I have this problem with my 11 speed drivetrain, when I install climbing setup with larger cassette. I have dura ace 9100 So cassette above 11-30 is hard to dial. You either have smooth shifting on the lower or upper cogs - have to choose. Do you guys think that changing chain for Shimano 12s can help ?

The larger the discrepency between the two cogs connected by the chain, the more wrap you will see on the large chainring and the less wrap you will see on the small chainring. Just think of an extreme example of a massive chainring at the front and a 10t at the back and move them close together. What happens to the wrap of the chain?
It won't be a big difference when you increase the front chainring size as they don't change size that much but it will change.

I think somewhere here people also complain about Dura Ace as well? It feels like Shimano just cannot get this thing correct from top to bottom. If your 8100 cassette is quiet and clicking-sound-free, use it then. Weight saving vs hassle-free, I'd choose hassle-free. (It is okay if people here choose the former.)cleanneon98 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 7:07 pmIs this issue existent at all on the 9200 11-30 cassettes?
