I’m currently away in Majorca, I’m using the hire bike to explore, whilst out the other day the chain dropped off the front and wedged itself with major intent on getting properly stuck, but had to be extremely forceful to free the chain, thing is as you’d imagine it has scratched the frame somewhat.. is this my responsibility, I feel terrible.. not dropped a chain since ever ago, do I fess up and apologise excessively or is it just down to “one of those things”
Thoughts please

Fess up? On the contrary. Go in there absolutely furious that they set up the bike improperly and that it was only your exceptional skill that prevented you from crashing and being seriously injured or killed and the bike completely destroyed. Demand that they refund at least 50% of the rental charge.

Yeah I pretty much agree. Either bike should be set up perfect or it should have chain drop guard to avoid those issues.
Only point of guilt would be if you knowingly did something really obviously likely to drop the chain say front and rear change same time, whilst high output and on steep incline.

I did just that, well most of what you suggested, I would of felt bloody terrible just to hand it back with out so much as an explanation, the hire guy was most understanding (company owner) don’t worry he said, happens all the time.. we just touch em up in the winter.
Well there you go, so thanks for the advice
