Partner and I are going to Barcelona for a business trip in September 2022 and looking into whether we could ride the Raid Pyrenean in the absence of an organized tour group. We might be willing to join a group like that but they're either not available the final week of September when we are available, or they're full. Ideally, we'd fine some way to have luggage transported between pre-booked lodging and then we'd just ride point to point.

Has anyone here done this ride in some way other than via one of the bigger organized tour groups, but without going fully loaded touring style? Curious to hear the way you did it!

Alternatively: can anyone recommend a good town to base out of for 3-4 nights in the pyrenees to ride the cols or some nice loops through the mountains?

Argeles-Gazost as a central base. Enough climbs reachable in a day to spend a week there. Spandelles, Soulor, Aubisque, Luz Ardiden, Cauterets Hautacam, Tourmalet, Aspin and 2 less famous climbs to Cirque de Troumouse and Gavarnie.
Stayed at a gite Les Gerbes with a well renowned WW poster and 7 others in 2016. Hautacam was visible across the valley. TdF is back there this year.

Try this place if you want a base. You can easily spend a week based here and not get close to covering everything the area has to offer. They are located in the next valley over from Argeles. Makes the Aspin, Hourquette d'ancizan, Portet, Azet and Peyrasuade more accessible while still giving relatively easy access to the the climbs Wobbly mentions. Tourmalet is also on the doorstep and there is a great ride to cap de lac du long if you have decent legs.

Andy and Caroline are great hosts, the accommodation is really comfortable and set up for bikes. The town is pretty reasonable too. You won't be disappointed ( you can probably tell I'm a fan).
