I don't think that's true at all these days. Understanding a racing line isn't rocket surgery. As I said before, there are numerous reasons why someone who knows what the best line should be will be too unsettled to actually use it effectively.

can we please take a moment to give a round of applause to Alejandro Valverde, aged 42, 10th overall, and Vincenzo Nibali, aged 37, currently 5th.
:beerchug:

I don't really care that much who wins this race, but I sure would love these two to remain in top 10. Valverde is a living and racing statue, he's been in the peloton for like forever, he's won a bunch, and I kinda feel like if it hasn't been for that dog of his, he would've been an icon today.. nevertheless, he's a truly remarkable athlete, makes me wanna put his poster over my bed
Hear Hear ! :beerchug:

But if he hadn't admitted it you'd be convinced he was clean? Despite winning a grand tour during the Armstrong era and being involved in the Lampre affair?
No. I was only remembering the smiley “tattoo” while typing on the Tube. I was the miserable sod pouring scorn on Uniballer’s exploits in 98-09, as well as being the smug sod in the wake of USADA’s reveal.

So you thought he was clean because he said so?

No. I made a mistake while typing a post and owned it when it was pointed out. You seem to have to harp on afterwards. So, pretty please, jog on.

One of the most exciting finishes to a GT stage and we are banging on about who won what, taking what, almost 20 years ago

Really wanted to see a sprint finish yesterday but hats off to the break, they never lost faith in each other until they had the time to do so.

Not having a go at all... its a great discussion to have.

The folk driving the chase must have been putting out serious watts in the last 7 or 8km, they decimated the peloton, QS seemed to be doing the bulk, with others saving themselves for the non sprint lol!

Somebody ( ex pro, might have been Nathan Haas) mentioned this last year in the Giro, in regards to Bernal looking completely natural on the gravel stage, and how he positioned himself. If you start your racing off road, you've got a sense of grip, loss of grip, the bike moving around under you.....

I'd love to see Bernal in a climber friendly MTB World Cup.....

For sure, you can practice those skills, but there's also an innate sense of balance that is just present in some people. I've learned to wheelie and on a good day I can maybe go 20-30', but I have a friend who can be off his bike for a year and as soon as he gets on it, he can wheelie it down the street. He's always had an amazing sense of balance. As a kid, he could ride a unicycle around the neighborhood, then when we got motorcycles and dirt bikes he could wheelie those. I've gone through some race driving instruction, I understand the racing line and it the instruction definitely made me faster, but I also realize that there's some "sense" that 'm lacking that the BEST race drivers have.

You're right that the racing line is not rocket science.... which is why it is crystal clear that some racers have no understanding of even the basics. You are right that may are plenty of times that using the dieal racing line isn't the best option, but when you're watching a group go down a descent and 4 of the riders use the ideal racing line and gap the 5th who is all over the road, that's not really the case.

Doesn't really seem like you owned it very much when you're still denying everything and saying I'm not reading your post properly. If you've owned that you were totally wrong about him why can't you let this go?

The BEST racing drivers didn't have the senses they have now after just 'some' race driving instruction. They have it after years of practice driving, racing and progressing.

And yes, there is a level where some people have the capacity to be great and others don't - but we're talking about basic competence and that can be taught. The gap between a great and average racing driver is a second a lap and some of that is innate. Bad descenders are losing a couple of seconds per corner - as long as you catch them before they've had such a bad crash that the confidence will never rebuild you caan absolutely teach them to do better than that.

That's not what I said. I said there are reasons why riders who don't properly practice descending won't take the lines they know are best. I mean think about what you're saying here - you think the 5th guy in line is too stupid to even understand that he could simply follow the wheel tracks of the riders in front? Of course not, there's obviously something else going on.
