The very first year of Castelli sponsorship the pads were sourced in Italy, almost from km 0.
No idea about later on.

Here's an example of a Castelli kit with an Assos (Cytech/Elastic Interface) pad labeled "Froomey."

Why do you figure that? The team has a staggeringly massive budget anyway and have proven more than willing to spend it on unsponsored equipment that might make them a fraction quicker. Better or more bespoke clothing is just as (if not more) important than better wheels, IMO.
Because Brailsford is Brailsford & very good at what he does not unlike Patrick Lefeveres
Your under the impression there is ever enough$$$?
So why don't they get a big company to pay them lots of money to use a normal set of wheels? The money's there to buy performance, it's not the goal in and of itself to be the richest team.

IIRC Sky/INEOS have gone as far as sewing Assos chamois pads into Castelli shorts and other alterations for specific team members.
I have nothing to back this up but I thought that was fairly widespread for several teams and suppliers?

I wear Castelli kit but only wear Assos shorts as the chamois are the best in industry. I think the Castelli chamois is terrible, always feels very thin and tough.

Same. It's a shame because the fit and feel of the rest of the short is (for me) really good, but for on saddle contact there's no comparison.

I trusted your words and didn't deny them to be true but thanks for sharing.
I only reported what my mate told me while he was working at Fizik and had to help Sky source the pads from Italy when they first switched to Castelli.

Elastic Interface's main R&D partnership is with Assos, but they are a separate Italian company that also supply the pads Fizik use in their shorts among many others. So it sounds like you are both correct at the same time.

Indeed. Elastic Interface supplies old Assos insert technology to other brands. Our previous kit supplier Trimtex had Assos S2 pads in them. Orange even, but no A.

This does not surprise considering how important fit & feel of chamois is to many riders

True. It's easy to go ride any brand bike all day, but things like chamois and saddles can get really personal. It's aslo true that a chamois that works wonderfully for one rider might not work at all for the next rider, so it's not a brand thing. There could be a rider out there wearing sponsored Assos bibs that prefers a Castelli pad.

I'd be surprised if some of them don't ride non sponsored saddles too.

Is it Assos technology or is it EI technology and Assos just has an agreement to get proprietary use of it for a certain amount of time? I know Patagonia used to have that agreement with Polartec (maybe they still do) where they got exclusive use of new Polartec fabrics for a while before they were sold to other companies.

Assos supply that as a service for a lot of pro riders.

^I wouldn't know, Mocs123. But who else than Assos could say make for us an insert with no stitches on the sides and a semi perforated front?
What I know is that the inserts in the Assos shorts are part of the construction, bespoke for the particular shorts model (and sometimes models). E. g. the RS S9 insert is used in four different models.
