Yes I /think/ it was grass snake. I have only ever seen a single live snake in England, which was a little baby one slithering across the road a few years ago. They seem pretty rare or at least difficult to see

Since I made that remark, I have actually seen a snake! Exactly as you did, a little baby one wriggling quite fast across a lane in Suffolk. I slammed on my brakes and ran back but by the time I was about to get a photo it was into the verge and gone.

Last week I did the Route des Grandes Alpes, going from lake Léman to the Mediterranean Sea passing by mythical alpine cols. It was an incredible trip that I can't recommend enough, here are a few pictures:

How much km end elevation in total? In how many days did you do it?
Was it bikepacking (can't see any bags) or did you have a 'team car'?

Indeed it was incredible !
I was with a tour operator that handled the luggage from an hotel to another, I saw a few riders doing it with luggage but I preferred to climb with a punchy pace.
It took 8 days for the whole trip, with 888 km and 21'983 m of elevation. I needed 43 hours of riding, it is really manageable even for beginners, with an adapted pace
The cols list is the following : Joux Plane, Colombière,
Aravis, Saisies, Pré, Cormet de Roselend, Iseran, Télégraphe, Galibier, Izoard, Vars, Bonette, Cayolle, Champs, Valberg, Couillole, Lombarde, Saint-Martin, Turini and Braus ; the official route is a bit shorter but the mythical ones are all included anyway, this route is a nice one for example : https://www.alpes4ever.com/la-route-des ... -7-etapes/
Every col was great but the most memorable were, in my opinion : Galibier, Iseran, Bonette, Lombarde, Champs, and Cayolle.

It's a great ride, that, you've ticked off some grand cols. I did a version of this in 1994 when it was known as the Alpine Raid and went from Thonon to Nice. There were four of us riding unsupported. The schedule was for 5 days but the incessant climbing cracked me and I needed an extra night for a 6 day transit.

Here's my contemporary bike featuring first version Campag ergo, triple chainset, and a very early Raleigh welded titanium frame.

Jealous of the pictures. I booked a trip to the Swiss Alps, and was planning to show off some pictures...but American Airlines lost my bicycle. So I'm sitting in Verbier looking at all these amazing roads, but without a bike. I can't rent because I have an idiosyncratic biomechanical issue, and need to use my own or risk injury.

I know, life could be worse, sitting in Verbier. But man, what a drag to be so close to cycling nirvana, and yet, so far.

Sorry for whining. Enjoy some weekend riding for me.

I didn't see it. I was so deep in the red zone to not fall off the bike

I know, Alpine tours are the best

Here's a few photos from mine, early this month.
Self supported (sleeping in B&Bs), 1300km, 27km of climbing, 11 days plus one rest day in the middle.
Mont Ventoux, Galibier, Iseran, Grindelwald and a few more.
