10 / 11 / 12 poll

I'm not interested in 12 speed, but since it's come out I started thinking- I get the top 3 need to make new stuff to keep us buying their kit, so why not make a slicker, lighter, 10 speed groupset? Short cage rear mech for man-gears (11-23 or 25max!), smaller battery and lighter cassette?

12 speed is more aero.

Probably because it'd be a hard sell to convince people they need less gears after years of telling them you need more.

Anything lighter/faster/cheaper is a good idea, but on your thinking why not nine speed or eight.. nah, people already lose their sheet about putting 1x on a bike..the market would probably just be just too niche or to difficult to sell to.

IME 10 speeds were more than enough but I like 11-29 cassettes so 11/12 speeds are good in that aspect.

I was seriously planning to get 12spd for this season, but I stayed with 11spd DA instead - went with 53/36 (swapped the 39) and 12-25 cassette (previously had a 11-23 for flats and 11-28 for hills). so I still have the desired range, got rid of 53/11 that I hardly ever used and don't really need (I don't race and don't test max speed on descents) and don't have to swap wheels or cassettes anymore. plus I saved a ton of cash.

but if Shimano introduces 12spd, I'll gladly switch.

Not sure i would benefit from 12 speed. If i would go for it, i would go for it to have an even more linear ratio than 11 speed.
I ride 50/36 and 11-28.
Probably rather try a 51 tooth big chainring, if it was available.

10 speed is great but no one would buy it.

From a wheel building perspective it is hard to see how more cogs can be added without compromising the stability if the rear wheel. Rotor 13 speed hubs have 50mm or is 47mm flange to flange spacing and that not alot. They then do there hub in 2:1 format with something like 17mm/33mm spacing. You can certainly build a wheel that way and it might be the best way for that geometry. However the 24h only hubs might be limiting for heavier riders.

14 speed well where would the sprocket go.

We've had that for years. Three of the bikes in our garage have Rohloff hubs - his, hers, tandem.

The larger cogs would cantilever over the hub flange since they'd be huge anyway, just like MTB cassettes already do. Also the chain/cog pitch will narrow once more. 1x14 is very doable without changing the freehubs at all. The question remains whether road bikes will go Boost to coalesce with future gravel bikes that do go Boost.

I'm happy with 11. I like being able to swap wheels.

I like anything that doesn't force me into new freehub and dropout designs. I just like to to able to run older stuff on newer bikes. That way you can choose to upgrade or be backward compatable. Once disk brakes are ubiquitous they'll probably change the rear end spacing and go 1x14 with boost type axles.

So for me 2x12, 2x11, 2x10, 2x9 or 1x12, 1x11, 1x10, 1x9. Not bothered really, but I prefer 1x12 as the jumps between gears are smaller, but honestly it hardly matters.

Boost is mostly for widening chainstays / forks to accommodate wider tires. I doubt 1x14 will result in a wider freehub than what's already implemented. Performance road bikes going Boost would only be because grave plus / monster cross style bikes take hold...I'm actually doubting this will happen after speculating about it in the past.

My bet is 1x14 simply cantilevers the largest cog over the hub flange while also reducing cog / chain pitch. Chainlines would suffer too much if cassettes get much wider.

it's like pandora's box: Sram and Campagnolo released a few 12-speed groupsets. Shimano has to follow and technology will trickle down to lwoer end groupsets. Further investment in 10-speed or 12-speed will no longer be relevant because customers always want more and better.
I'm happy with 11-speed as I was happy with 9-speed and as i will be with 12-speed in the future (never owned 10-speed). But today I won't buy 9-speed or 10-speed anymore (except for a city bike (mine has till 7-speed) or vintage bike)
