No, he gets paid handsomely but he's a slave to his sponsors, that's the deal. Wherever he'd move to it would be similar, he's always going to have to sign so many autographs, do interviews, wear the team kit and ride the team bike, do the odd wheelie or something wherever he goes. He was forced onto an Allez with disk brakes at the last minute in Australia and didn't win probably because he was unfamiliar with that heavier bike, not because it's a bad bike. Also other riders on disks will have huge problems at the back of the peloton if they get a flat because they will only be able to take wheels from their own team. The days where a big name pro can use their favorite tires or saddle from another company with the names blacked out are over, online content such as GCN doing a bike check will see it immediately.AJS914 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 4:11 amThe idea that pro riders or teams are coerced to ride these products is just ridiculous. Peter Sagan and Bora could ride whatever they damn well please and they choose to partner with Specialized. I'm sure Sagan smiles broadly when he cashes his 6M euro check every year.
So it all breaks down to this: Marketing is king, and marketing road bikes to the masses is a massive part of the sport of cycling. Marketing and making money is so important that sportsmen and women are forced to sacrifice results in order to satisfy it. As an amateur rider people should realize this and buy products that an unaffiliated retired pro would like, not what the marketing dept of corporations have decided is newer and better.
Impossible to know why he didn't win, perhaps the other rider was just faster, or perhaps he didn't have his morning poop
That's the way it should be as far as I am concerned. It's a team sport, the team should be responsible for keeping they're guys going, it should be part of their strategy. Getting rid of neutral service would also reduce the number of vehicles on the road and increase safety. Also other riders on disks will have huge problems at the back of the peloton if they get a flat because they will only be able to take wheels from their own team.

They're choice to go pro, they know what is involved, no one is forcing them to do anything. And without marketing there would be no pro cycling, that's the only reason it exists. So it all breaks down to this: Marketing is king, and marketing road bikes to the masses is a massive part of the sport of cycling. No, you should do your own research and buy what you want and what works best for you.As an amateur rider people should realize this and buy products that an unaffiliated retired pro would like, not what the marketing dept of corporations have decided is newer and better.

Sagan doesn't usually win sprints in the "not actually the TDU" because 1) he's not even a pure sprinter like Ewan and 2) he needs to peak for the spring classics not the first race on the calendar. Meanwhile nobody should be surprised that Aussie riders / teams care more about hometown races.
exactly.. give Ewan some credit... he definately wanted/needed it more to impress the new sponsors and all.TobinHatesYou wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 2:08 amSagan doesn't usually win sprints in the "not actually the TDU" because 1) he's not even a pure sprinter like Ewan and 2) he needs to peak for the spring classics not the first race on the calendar. I think you have it backwards. They built that team around him. He brought his entourage of domestiques and trainers with him. They would have rode any bike he wanted to ride. "Wear the team kit" - really??? You know that Sagan signed on to be a pro cyclist right? I don't think it ever occured to Sagan that he is being forced to wear the team kit.Lewn777 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 1:02 amNo, he gets paid handsomely but he's a slave to his sponsors, that's the deal. Did you see that sprint? Sagan was third wheel and had full benefit of the leadout. Either he just didn't have it or he gave it to the local guys so they could do him a favor down the road. It's also January and he's not going to peak for this race. Sagan at 80% is a 2rd place. That's why his team and his sponsors are his slaves.
disk slows you down watch the f*** video. viviani continues disk domination. the little boy Ewan should stick to NA criteriums. he is going to get crushed in old europe

Why is all this a bad thing again? Marketing grows the sport and riase participation. Nobody force anyone to buy anything. People are smart enough to decide what they want to spend money on. Get real. Sagan is a professional. He won 3 world titles with whatever bike he had. Venge Vias was not a 'good bike' by this forum standard and he won lots of races on it including many Tour de France stage. If you have an issue with disc brake don't extrapolate it to other people. Don't like it don't buy it. It's tiring to read these kind of arguments over and over. Pro will use what they are told to use. That's their job. If they are good at their job they will win on any gears. Viviani had no trouble winning most the sprints he contested last year with the new disc only Venge. he also won with a disc bike this morning in 3 bike length. It was not even close.
You should also give some credit to non pro riders. We know a lot more about gears than many pros do. Go ask pros if they can tell Tune stem from THM. You will get a blank stare from half the peloton. You should not buy gears according to any pro, retired or not. Just make your own decision.

Lol AJS914. Lewn777 is going to see whatever he wants to see, say whatever he wants to say to shit on discs. Once this thread dies, he’ll just start another one in the spring when a rim-brake bike wins a monument.
Just seen this thread. Talking to one of the Bora pros (can't obviously name names!) whilst I was in Girona over Christmas and he completely detests disc brakes and I was getting the vibe this is a common feeling in the peleton. There you go, straight from the horse's gob!

Are you too young to remember the sudo-science that Giant used to 'prove' 27.5 inch MTB's were better than 26 inch bikes?ichobi wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 5:57 amWhy is all this a bad thing again? There's a point where marketing becomes market manipulation, and it's guys like you that just lie down and take in the ass.
Great riders can win on almost any bike, because as I think we all know it's all about having huge cardio and being able to put out 6w/kg or whatever their particular specialization.
But why would a pro rider hate on such amazing new technology?liam7020 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 9:08 amJust seen this thread. Maybe the constant pad rubbing and not being able to change a wheel if he's off the back might be stressing him out.
it gets even funnier - there was this vid of Nibbles flying down some Italian country road on a disc brake Merida. so much hype on how the greatest descendant picks up the greatest blah blah blah.. then there's Bahrain-Merida team presentation, with this Reacto discs standing in the middle of a stage.. but guess what bikes are they going to race this season?

Yeah, you would get a stare mainly because it's an idiotic, meaningless question.

no the point is that many ams and especially ones on forums like ww are more into these bits of swag on a bike. Sure some pros know what's up, but many dont care and just want something that fits them and works. Go back and reread ichobi comments and what it was a response too... it's not idiotic.
