I’m planning an overseas cycling trip

Europe is a bit far away and Japan is much closer

I really like the idea of staying in Tokyo for a few days and going up Mount Fuji

The Tour Japan includes Mount Fuji, looks very impressive.

If you’ve done this ride what’s your advice?

Many Thanks

Is this a prepaid bike tour package or something you planning to ride on your own?

Planning to go with a friend
Making our own arrangements
Staying in Japan for 10 days ish
Initially fly into Tokyo
Flying on Air New Zealand as they don’t charge extra for bikes if they are within luggage allowance

I’d like to know about the idiosyncrasies of cycling in Japan
Any tips about best places to stay within cycling distance of Mount Fuji

Never taken my bike overseas and cycled
But if it goes well planning on riding some of the Tour DownUnder stages

Then maybe Europe

Following this thread. I love Japan and would love to cycle Mount Fuji too one day. I follow Rides of Japan on YouTube and I believe he posts his Strava routes. Might be good to ask him for advice too. Maybe there are groups that summit frequently.

Yeah, Rides of Japan is a good guy. Knocked out around 80,000kms in Japan myself over the last 6 years, although not around Fuji. I would try to avoid weekends though, probably lots of tour buses. Sorry I can't give any specific help. Have a search on https://tokyocycle.com, lots of good info there. The cycling in Japan is great once you get out of urban areas, so many roads and climbs. Riding in the city is not much fun due to an extreme amount of traffic lights, narrow roads and lack of cycle lanes.

Having just returned from 3 great months of cycling in SE Asia I have just one suggestion...

Time your visit for good weather...Meaning not too hot & not monsoon season :D

Where I went Oct > Jan was perfect timing wise.

Asia can get wild humidity wise during say April/May
Temps can hit 40c+

Then Aug/Sept can have heavy rains

But check the weather patterns & temps for where you want to go
Have Fun Asia is cycling nuts right now they love it
