MVDP has contracts with both Canyon and Corendon-Circus, which will be known as Alpecin-Fenix in a few days, the team continues to build up around Mathieu for 2020 as confirmed by Canyon boss Roman Arnold just a few days ago. No way he will break both contracts. QuickStep have pretty much spent their whole rider budget for 2020 already anyway (they had to let go of Gilbert and Viviani to be able to afford keeping Alaphilippe, used the pocket change to sign Bennett). Even with Specialized's money, I doubt they could afford Mathieu's big salary plus the ridiculously high amount the Rodhooft brothers and Canyon would ask to release him from his long term contracts.
He's racing in Baal January 1st but the team has an official launch event on January 3rd if I recall.

Also not that likey given mvdp has made it fairly well known that one of his priorities for 2020 is MTB at the Tokyo Olympics.

If QS broke the news too early it might mean, that "next year" will be 2021. And honestly, if you want to maximize your outcome with MVDP, you cant have a team like Correndon Circus helping him in the big road races. You need top of the line domestiques.
