lol nope. Dege asked specifically for 1x, and as far as marketing goes - companies simply introduce goods that answer customers' demand, no need to 'market' them ....

has anyone actually got a photo of degenkolbs bike at milan san remo? Everyone is saying hes using 1x but i'm yet to see anything that shows his front chainring setup. It would be absolutely classic Sram red front mech behaviour to chuck a chain over the ring going up into the big dawg

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or if you know that Degenkolb really did specifically ask for 1x, which would surprise the hell out of me if he did. But given SRAM’s shifting performance in the 2x system, perhaps he did, thinking it might be the lesser of two evils. But as @Stitchking just asked, do we even know for sure he was using 1x? I’m just assuming he was because that’s what I’m hearing, but I have no real evidence of it for certain. Although it certainly looked from the way he was trying to bounce his bike up and down that maybe he was trying to “throw” the chain into the air hoping it would somehow land back on the single ring, whereas if he had a double you’d think he would just be messing with the front derailleur in an attempt to right it. I don’t know, but whatever it was... you can be sure heads are rollin’ somewhere.

This is not news. Mads Pedersen has been running 1x over cobbles on the opening weekend and got out alright. He was somewhat of a contender too so they must have been testing this over rough roads for a bit (which doesn't really make a good case for them since MSR is on smooth road, kind of beg the question wtf happened since it seemed to run fine on cobble.).

Can someone explain how do you drop a chain on a 1x system? I have a 2x system and run cross chain all the time and never dropped a chain when not shifting the chain.

1x is not the problem, the problem is SRAM's mickey mouse enginneering team. they alway release beta hardware.

history lesson mavic and then campy tried and failed to deliver a reliable electronic groupset. shimano took their time and released di2 the golden standard. history will repeat once 13speed becomes viable .

Not having experience on AXS RD's clutch mechanism, only thing I can think of is pedaling backwards with chain at shorter end of cassette.

To me, Degenkolb's efforts to rescue the situation looked like he thought the chain had wedged under the crank axle between the frame and chainring. But that would be out of ordinary.

If you pause the chase bike footage at the right point you can see between the stays to the front ring and it definitely looks like a single ring without a front mech or chain guide.

A front derailleur is a chain guide.

Since you mention beta testing: That first generation Di2 was a polished turd.

Mavic was not reliable. Campag pulled 10 speed electronic from pro team field testing after they found that the chosen IP rating wasn't good enough in torrential rain at autostrada speeds.

SRAM is SRAM, enough said.

you got that right  just replying to a previous comment about how seeing evil corporations behind every corner trying to make money on us is "funny" - perhaps if someone has spent last two decades in a jail, or has a big company of his own, then such pov might be justified - not right, but at least understandable.

as for FD issues - I've no valid experience with Sram (I used Rival and Force briefly) but since I started riding (and long before I learned how to adjust derailleurs the right way) I had many inferior drivetrains on my bikes - like RX100 or Sora.. and I've never dropped a chain, not even once. how on earth a pro mechanic, who has the knowledge and experience, and is aware a certain FD might cause issues, lets his riders go without a simple chain catcher? how on earth an important dude like Degenkolb, one of contenders for the win, instead of puting a gun to his mechanic's head telling him to set it up properly, picks a 1x hoping it won't break... if somehow bizarrely it is true, then Trek indeed runs some really shitty operation...

sram marketing emphasizes since the beginning of their 1x strategy, that chain catchers or guides are unnecessary. Sponsored riders running chain catchers/guides would totally contradict their claims and therefore they can't use them. Even van Aert in CX had to run the system without a chain guide.

Pedersen ran 1x in some of the paris nice stages, which included some steep climbs. During the broadcoast of the sixth stage you could see him really struggling, out of the saddle and having problems to spin the cranks in very steep part of a climb.
He was riding a madone with shallow wheels, so he obviously didn't give up the fd for weight savings. Otherwise he would have ridden the emonda. But he didn't use deep wheels, aero bars, an aero helmet or a skinsuit, so he for sure didn't think about aero advantages.
So why would he make his race more difficult for no reason? The answer is simple to me. He didn't choose 1x on his own. Someone wanted to showcase their 1x setup in the pro peloton and therefore someone had to use it.

. In PN he was not a contender. There is no harm really trying out new gears if you are going to finish with the pack anyway. I don't think these conspiracies are justified really. Trek of all teams are running TT bike with Zipp disc and PRO tri spokes, debadged and rebadged to look like a Bontrager even before SRAM becomes a sponsor. Everybody knows what they use despite the Bontrager sticker. You could make a case that Bontrager is lenient in this regard but there are tons of case where riders use non sponsor gears. If teams are really forced to ride stuff by sponsor these kind of things would never have happened. It's not like Bontrager can't make a decent prototype disc wheels for the team to run.

AG2R comes to mind. They hate the Merckx EM525. They asked for a debadged Ridley Helium. They run Ultegra and DuraAce despite being sponsored by Campagnolo and they publicly complain about sponsored equipment not being up to par.
