Dan Mcclay seems to be riding a new Cannondale aero road bike. I mean look at those seatstays. Also aero bar. Any clues?
There's a thread in the road forum about C'Dale putting a 'SystemSix' road bike onto the UCI approved list late last summer, and that it will finally be an aero road bike. That's the first pic I've seen of it though, hopefully some journos will take more photos of it around the EF team bus during this race!

Could have been triggered by bikes swarming around the sides?
Doesn't look like it. There's a video on twitter linked in the comments of the above article and it doesn't look like anything changes at all from during the 100m before to when the car (or driver) decides to brake. Peloton is on the rear bumper, motos are 2m either side, everything's happily holding station... then chaos

Here's a quote from Wiggins during the announcement of Team Wiggins U23 when asked for advice for young aspiring riders...

"Don’t go to Sky, steer clear of them. Go somewhere else because they’ll ruin you. They are not barbed jokes or digs, that’s the reality of the sport at the moment. I saw the reports only last week from [the Ruta del Sol in] Andalusia, or wherever it was, and they are the best team in the world. How many races did they win last week? And there’s a lot of talk about them at the moment and there’s a lot of negative talk as well."

Best,

saw the twitter video this morning of the crash. . .off the top of my head it seemed as if part of the peloton was close to the front of the car, which probably triggered the auto-brake

- I would also agree this is the likely cause rather than 'theory' below. Possibly not the peloton but other motorcycle outriders.

"That theory was confirmed shortly afterwards by RCS Sport race director Stefano Allocchio, who was a passenger in the Mercedes that led the bunch through the neutralised zone. When the riders behind the car moved close enough to trigger the sensor, the car's brakes were automatically applied."

Then of course, I am cynical and as a pilot know that 80%+ of aviation accidents are caused by human factors and mis-understanding of automation. Did anyone actually see the brake lights illuminate on the vehicle?

No, definitely not. The peloton was bang in line with the rear fender of the car. No riders got close to the front of it or even alongside it until (and because) it was already slowing down.

Unless the driver made a mistake and let off the gas or knocked it out of gear and then the autobrake happened when the car was already getting swamped. Not a root cause but an aggravating factor.

I would almost guarantee this is the root cause...

Okay, so after a bit more research.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3BIHv2Aj4M

The system in question they are discussing, Pre-Safe Plus, does brake the car in the case of an impending rear impact being detected. But only when the car is stationary. This is quite sensible as the video above shows. If the car is in motion as was shown in the video above then rear proximity would not activate the brakes.

I suspect wingguy's explanation is plausible. The person in the control of the vehicle either dis-engaging drive, or accelerator and the vehicle being swamped. This may have caused another system to activate but again, I did not see the vehicles's brake lights activate. I would guess this is pure driver error and nothing more.

Honestly, I don't know why some riders seem so keen on riding 1 foot behind a car. If I were a rider I wouldn't trust that car.

So, how come nobody directly behind the car crashed into the car? It honestly looks like a wheel touch.

And it was a Benz - WTF!!! Someone should pay for that. A system like that cannot be intentional - that would be insane. There is an auto brake system that brakes for front obstacles. Perhaps the rear sensor for proximity warning used for parking was accidentally connected to the auto-brake system.
yes this makes no sense... why would a car brake (in forward drive) from something approaching from the rear. Benz has some explaining to do. I have a Subaru with all the lastest braking shat... they call it RAB and it only works in the rear when I am in neutral or reverse !
Yeah, my parents have that. I was moving their car out of the way once and it kicked in.

I'm trying to think of a scenario in which the RAB would engage when driving forwards. Maybe if you put the car in neutral while going forwards? Could you test that? My 2008 Impreza doesn't have such new-fangled technology.

check RAB only comes on in REVERSE.. sensor is not lite in neutral.

I've never understood this either, especially given how many of them have been whacked by cars or motorbikes recently. I suppose they're doing it to be close enough to jump in any potential breaks that go, but honestly, the first one never lasts anyway.
