arguably he was a different rider back then, less confident, less powerfull... although he did have his "GC moments" (that Giro won by Quintana after he attacked on neutralised descent). I agree SKY seems like a good fit resources-wise. it's been basically two similar years in a row though - strong classic season, then a monster ride in Tour, followed by San Sebastian in '17 and currently two stages (so far) at TdP. of course this stick has two ends - the work he provides for SKY is often returned when he is the leader (apart from that Tour of Britain few years back) - I wonder if there are any teams, apart from QS maybe, with such a strong morale and discipline.

I feel like guys at Michelton-Scott are pretty good at working for each other pretty self-lessly.

Just can't beleive this story about Adrien Costa... I've been following him since 2014-2015 when I saw his results in the Junior ITT's at the WC's, along with Powliss and Sepp Kuss. I thought this trio of young americans really seemed to have a strong chance in the future. So crazy to seee how quickly life can change.

Sunweb? Barguil got kicked out when he refused to work last year at the Vuelta and this year Matthews said at the start that he was at the TDF to support Tom rather than sprint on every flat stage. Every GT they start for the GC it's all for the leader and unless he takes a stage there is a small chance they will win any.

Marc Madiot, the Groupama-FDJ manager, has always been a traditionalist. His riders have always sported national championship jerseys that harken back to the golden days of the sport. The full national championship design is always expressed and there is an absolute minimum of branding applied - only the kit manufacturer and the mandatory UCI World Tour insignia are there. Not even the team sponsors get shown on there. This is unique in today's cycling and I like it. Some of the bastardised national champ jerseys that are trotted out these days are unfortunate. I feel they do a disservice to the prestige of the national titles and I don't know why the national federations, who own the designs and can force the riders to where a jersey reflecting their desired design, don't do more to ensure respect for the traditional designs.


This all started, of course, back in 1992 when Indurain won the Spanish national road title. Banesto didn't want their iconic branding design to be obscured by the red and yellow banded jersey of the Spanish national champ design so they went with thick red and yellow bands around the arm cuffs of Indurain's jersey. It's been downhill ever since. The Banesto team organization, which has morphed through a few sponsors into the team we know as Movistar today, is the worst offender in this. The jerseys that national champions ride in their team are often unrecognizable as intending to honor national champs.

If only the UCI would get involved and force some compliance and adherence to tradition.... but, alas, I think that horse has bolted. Cheers to Marc Madiot and Groupama-FDJ.

I've heard that Banesto story before and I agree that their version of National Championship jerseys has been poor.

I've also heard recently that due to their base in nothern Spain (Navarre), they don't want to offend the local Basque Nationals. No idea if that is true.

I do think the current Spanish jersey (Bahrain) does look great.

When it comes to national champion jerseys it all depends I suppose. I don't find Viviani's too bad...

i thought larry warbase's USA jersey last season was good considering the poor ones we've had in the past

Not sure why you're saying largely uphill... it went uphill, a total 150' on the way out, then dropped 50' before the turn around, then back up 50' before finally dropping 150' to the line. It's not like it was a hil climb TT.

tbh commented before I watched it in full. I found it actually pretty funny that the large majority of the riders did the sit-on-top-tube thing on the descent, then see Tejay on the drops with his elbows out smashing the pedals on the descent and crushing all of their times . Makes me really wonder if that position is just a fad.. he didn't even do the Cancellara forearms on handlebar position either

Any national champ with shorts anything other than black is a travesty. It just throws it off completely.

Back when Froome made it famous, there was some testing of the various positions done and the sit on tube came out as the least aero, and one of the most unstable...

I think most people these days (including Froome) use #1 or #4. It's a moot point if you're not actually spinning out 53x11 which it seems to me, most people who use these positions aren't more often than not (I've even seen commuters do it on 300m shallow 4% descent lol). Even the commentators were laughing at Bookwalter for trying to spin the pedals while in this position since there's no real point if you can't put any power through it

I do #1 all the time on medicore grade descents... just to see how far I can go without pedelling at all.
