Happy New Year everyone.
Did a different ride today, just tried to cover all the local dead end climbs at one end of our Port Hills. It was the first time for a while on some of those roads.
One climb was up a road that was hit by fire about a year ago. The fire got very close to taking out a big chunk of Christchurch, instead only a few houses (and the life of one brave chopper pilot) were lost. The photo above shows the half burnt gate of one of the burnt down houses.
This one (below) is of a house on the same road. Looks abandoned, but bizarrely has a new fence. Possibly an ongoing insurance battle???
And with this next photo we can see how random the fire was - live on the left side of this part of the road and you are ok, right side not so much (but different story further down the hill, the left side was hit worse than right):
Cheers
GJ

A week of contrasts: in the first pic we were hiding from the sun in an abandoned building , with temperatures of 38C outside.
The very next day, rain, wind and 5C. I had to resort to wearing my light duty space blanket (which I pack for such emergencies when trekking) under my kit to stay warm.
Organized trekking excursion in 2017, pics taken by event photographer, Peter. (= me in the bottom pic)
