Oh no... Blythe.. Let's hope we don't get to see him in a wet spring classic :frightened:

Maybe they gave it to him along with a ton of cash to wear those glasses. Seriously there is more to the story about the glasses. Luxotica doesn't loose a marketing dream like Sagan. I'm guessing either:

1. Cav through a fit after loosing the WC and got LUX to pull their endorsement of Sagan
2. Sagan is playing a long game and backing lesser known products for an equity share (e.g., Osmo)

what would that mean?

ps. Bora has Adidas Eyewear as a sponsor (but Sagan uses another brand); first pic of Koen de Kort in Trek jersey and he wears Rudy-Projet glasses https://www.instagram.com/p/BOtDdbSARVh/

Luxottica had a cash shortage?

Maybe, net income for H1 2016 was down 5.9% to only 500m euro :D

Significant equity stake in lesser brands could be worth more in the future than paid endorsements. Especially if Sagan can use his status to elevate the brand. By long game, I mean this could pay off well past his cycling career or if something would happen to him. It would be a gamble to do this with one brand, but if he could build a basket of lesser brands he could do well in the aggregate.

Would not be surprised if he used the jump to Bora to get some flexibility to work some side deals. He seems like a savvy character or, at least, is well advised.

I thought teams had learned white paints is just a bad idea?

No TJ-Sport, wish we knew the real story behind that drama.

Lampre is TJ-Sport is UAE Abu Dhabi.

Sarroni claims that everything was in place with the Chinese backers but the boss got ill and couldn't sign the papers. Sounds far fetched. Either way he just had to go last minute shopping for a middle eastern sugar daddy. Nice new years present for all those riders and staff to still have a job!

I wonder if it had shades of Giancarlo Ferretti and the Sony-Ericsson fiasco with Fassa-Bortolo? Several very big names were caught out with that one, including O'Grady, Simoni and White. Sometimes cycling management is very amateurish hiding behind an air of professionalism!

Great to hear that the TJ-Sport team has survived with new sponsors.

Perhaps the UCI is still obsessed with gaining a large cycling following in the Middle East and the TJ-sport deal was a no go from day one? I know China is a "growing market" but I could see the UCI using crazy logic to decide the Middle East just needs more teams to get residents to turn out to races.

Good for the racers but it just seems like more UCI politics. I'm also not crazy about national (government) sponsored teams.

Wait, are you saying the UCI intentionally sabotaged the Chinese purchase of the Lampre team because they knew there was an Arabian backer willing to step in, or are you just confused about the situation?

Saronni's team with Chinese backing had a provisional WT spot ready to go, it wasn't blocked by the UCI, it was the Chinese who didn't come through with any actual funding in time. That meant that Saronni had to go in search of other money to enable the team to take up that WT spot, and the people he found were in the Emirates. It would take a particularly Machiavellian view of the UCI to assume it was part of their grand plan all along
