Wrapping bar tape in wrong direction is sure way to get them peeled off in no time.

I agree it looks pretty bad with modern tape. But it wasn't uncommon to see benotto tape wrapped that way back in the day. Never came off either.

The glue is just there to rip the tape when you take it off so you can't reuse it.

The perfect finish is where you can see the perfectly trimmed end of the bar tape peeking out from beneath the finishing tape.....

I was speaking in reference to the comment on wrapping bars without tape. I do agree the best looking finish is the one pictured above by btompkins.
