If it's anything to go by:
Belgium: 11 million people, 107 Michelin stars (3x three stars, 15x two stars, 89x one star)
Italy: 61 million people, 292 Michelin stars (7, 38, 250)
Means one star for every 209,000 Italians but one star for every 103,000 Belgians. So Belgium is almost twice as culinary as Italy

I would agree with you on both counts Russianbear. Away from the clip joints that is all most ever see of Italy, the most unprepossessing places in Italy delight, often at astonishingly low prices.
Michelin Star and corporate BS in Brussels. Been there done that. No thank you.

According to Jules Destree* there's no such thing as a Belgian. I tend to agree as Belgium is not about Belgians. It's about Flanders and its Flemish people and Wallonia which has its own ethnicity and culture.
Most things cycling related happen in Flanders. Wallonia has, to put it bluntly, been sitting on its glorified behind for the past fifty years thinking the coal mines would last forever. Sounds familiar?
Politics and history aside, yes I'm Belgian. Yet more than anything else I'm Flemish and very proud of it too.
Having been the battle field of Europe for centuries in a row has pretty much defined our personality. We all are the children of our invadors.
From the Spanish through the Portuguese, French or Dutch, Austrian, you name it, all of them fought their battles in Flanders Fields. Not to mention WWI and WWII.
All of these continuous battles forged a people. No matter how small in number, that had to keep its head down all the time, that were suppressed all the time.
That's also how out of the brazing ashes of the battlefields heroes arose. People with very little means stood up and fought back. Racing. Be that a bicycle or using boxing gloves, they carved their name for Flanders Fields. The battle fields.
Races such as the Tour of Flanders are nothing more than us fighting back, defending our territory. Paris-Roubaix is all about regaining our territory; French Flanders. It's ours, it has no place being part of France, it is populated by Flemish people, it breaths Flanders.
It does put PR in a different respective I guess but to us, Flemish, winning PR is winning back what belongs to us.
