Bloomberg Article: Portland Is Top Bike-to-Work City as Lawyers Hit Street. Lawyers can be a cyclist's friend, even a cyclist themselves.
I wonder how the lunchtime “Lawyers Ride” into the hills west of town (Portland) compares to the <engineers'> Noon ride from Palo Alto blasting up Old La Honda?

I'm a lawyer and I ride. I don't know if that counts as mixing though.

Yes, but do you ride a Serotta or Parlee? And do you keep the lawyer tabs on your fork?
BTW, there's a common misconception that Seottas are only for 50 year old dentists. That's not true - doctors and lawyers can ride them as well. It wasn't always this way, though, as I recall seeing Eric Heiden's 7-11 bike built by Serotta, but not labeled as such. Serottas started out as just regular good bikes, before they ultimately attained the reputation as dentist/doctor/lawyer bikes.

Ive owned both, a serotta and now a parlee and I'm none of the above. I run a cafe.
Both awesome bikes I'd get another parlee and a serotta for sure

Same here. Neither lawyer, nor dentist, nor doctor. But riding a Parlee. Cliches can be so stereotypical...
Guys I know who ride Parlees are 2 Paramedics, engineer, project manager, architect. Of the above 4 race in Cat A and B Masters so not just posers.
Lawyers I know ride a Passoni, Colnago, Pinarello
stereotyping gone wrong

Not at all.
Serotta --> Dentist, Doctor, or Lawyer
Dentist or Doctor --> Serotta or Parlee
Lawyers --> can ride what they want, but Serottas and Parlees are common
Parlee does not --> dentist, doctor, or lawyer
Parlees are ridden by boulevard cruising dentists, doctors, and lawyers, but also by hard core racers of whatever profession. In short, Parlees can serve all segments of the high end road bike market.
Please read more carefully next time. As any student of logic or mathematics knows, A --> B does not imply B --> A. This is often a point of confusion for the layman, and at the root of the misinterpretation of and fallacious counterexamples to my post.

One doctor, and racer

Here is my read:
Doctors, lawyers, dentists ---> not cool.
Anybody who races at Cat 2 or below level ---> cool.
Anybody who races at Cat 2 or below level on a cheap CAAD10 level (or below) bike ---> super cool.
Doctors, lawyers, dentists who races at Cat 2 or below level ---> !@#$@%_)@#?!!
Parlee ---> quadruple cool, despite doctors/lawyers/dentists
Serotta ---> not cool (any more, thanks to the dentists... )
Colnago ---> could be cool, depends who you ask
Passoni ---> double not cool
Pinarello ---> quadruple not cool. F*** Pinarello
What fun would life be without a(n un)healthy drop of stereotyping?

Point taken. I was speaking of the U.S., and on an international forum such as this, it was my error for not stating so.RTW wrote:Come to the UK. Cervelo are the dentists bike of choice.
I should also correct my statement, as applicable to the U.S.,
Dentist or Doctor --> Serotta or Parlee
should be
Dentist or Doctor --> Serotta, Parlee, or Colnago
In the U.S., as with Parlees, Colnagos can be ridden by anyone from boulevard cruising dentists, doctors, and lawyers, to hard core racers of whatever profession.

Cyclists are a weird bunch. It's a reverse snobbish behavior. This is the only community I know of where you are looked down upon for being a doctor, dentist or lawyer. Is it a jealousy fueled hatred. Since when is it "not cool" to make the most out of your life? I personally spent 7 years after college training to become a periodontist. Some people train longer. While I would have liked to have ridden my bike instead of studying, I chose to spend 85% of those days either in the labs, clinics or studying. The reward for this is a nice salary, so I can buy nice things and live a nice lifestyle. Anyone of you could have chosen a similar path. I guess it's just easier and "cooler" to look down upon it and criticize. It's a weird and sad thought process many of you have. I hope you are all teaching your children that it's okay and dare I say "cool" to push yourself in other areas besides cycling. Because as we all know, cycling doesn't pay the bills.

gum, sorry, you are allowed to ride a Time, Ruegamer, or Crumpton, because you started serious riding well under 50 years of age. When you get to 50, it's up to you whether you switch over to a Serotta, Parlee, or Colnago - the important thing is that you don't have to.
