Hi

I have a Teammachine SLR 01 with a Cockpit ICS2 carbon cockpit. I constantly experience neck pain and discomfort in my arms due to the excessively negative angle of the stem. Previously, I rode a Tarmac with a 4 cm greater drop, and I didn’t have any pain. I have also consulted several professional bike fitters for assistance.

Is it possible to use a different stem/handlebar setup, such as one from Enve or another brand? Otherwise, I feel that I may have to change my bike altogether.

The bike is 4 years old, and I am unsure if there have been any changes to the cockpit designs regarding angles.

Thank you for your help.

Could the neck pain be caused by the fact that your BMC handlebar is 4 cm higher than your previous setup? I get tension in my neck and shoulders when the reach is too close and/or the handlebar is too high; it scrunches the upper body into an uncomfortable position.

Thank you for your feedback. If "drop" 4cm less then on the Specialized model, I should experience less pressure on my hands. I feel that the reach is too long rather than too short. I am considering buying a new cockpit with a stem that is 110 mm or even 100 mm, as I currently have a 120 mm stem.

Does anyone maybe know can some other cockpit can be used on this bikes?

I had the same symptoms when my reach was too long, I switched both bikes to 90 mm stem and problems disappeared immediately.

I had been having a similar problem with pressure in my hands recently. At the last minute, I decided to get a fitting while I was on a cycling holiday in Girona. It turned out that the guy who did my fitting is one of the bike fitters for Team UAE.

I also thought he would for sure suggest a shorter stem and/or a higher handlebar position but in the end, he ended up extending my reach and lowering my handlebar slightly, and voila, my hands are much more comfortable now :-) What was going on was that because I didn't have enough extension, my hands weren't in the position they should have been in and the hoods were "pushing into my palms" for the lack of a better description, creating some discomfort.

My remedy may or may not be applicable to your situation; I only mentioned this because you said you had no discomfort previously with more drop.

Good luck!

Thank you. But did you feel that you have an issue with short reach, or did you feel that you are too much extended? Because I have a filling that I am too much extended. I do not know if lowering my handlebar will make sense as right now, when I am on the bars, I will disconnect when I am trying to watch a road before me.

Do you have the option of visiting a bike fitter who uses an adjustable fit bike to simulate different positions? They can set up the levers at the same angle / width as you currently have, then you can see if using a shorter stem or different stem angle indeed addresses your issues before spending a whole lot of money on a new cockpit or even a new bike :-)

Something like this:

That's interesting to be able to try all kinds of fitting options at home and for a multi hour "ride". How is the adjustment range on it? Like, does it have enough reach for a tall rider to try a "long" setup? Plenty of fore/aft saddle adjustment?
