Ahhh.. I didn't realize that. I knew he was a good TT'er, but I didn't realize that he was current NZ champ.

I just came across this footage of Merckx' hour record on youtube so I thought I'd share:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ACuagWkGk4

Is that Ernesto Colnago holding the spare bike at 4:18? It sounds like the interviewer says "Ernesto" and it sort of looks like him.

Another one in French:

Okay, enough. I really don't want to see pro's holding exotic animals on SoMe anymore. We've seen it now, move on, please.

Of course it’s Ernesto...

anyone else tired of GVA overdoing the Olympic gold schtik?

Arm band, okay. Decal on the bike here or there, okay. Pretty much anything else, way too much.

well.... if I were an Olympic gold medalist, I'd definitely wear gold kicks, that's beyond any doubt. perhaps I'd go with some gold bits on my bike if it matched the design as well. given CCC's riding plain black, GVA's bike fits in pretty well imho.

looks way more appropriate than the big white whale (euro champ) too....

I haven't been a fan of GVA's gold bikes in the past, but I really like this one from Giant. I think they did a good job.

Very much! Gold is so overdone. The helmet looks awful.

IIRC Merckx wanted his bike as light as possible, plenty of drillium parts. There was a real possibilty that it wouldn't survive the initial acceleration. I guess that's why Ernesto was finished with making bikes to Eddy's exacting specs. To have his hour record bike fold on the starting line would have reflected badly on Colnago.

And to think how much time Merckx spent drilling out parts to save weight. Can you imagine how mental he would have been knowing what we know now about aerodynamics?
