I don't see any recent threads after a decent search, so I'm wondering if I could get some current recommendations for a nice bar bell?
I don't need much in the way of weightweenie criteria, but it should look good (and of course be a useful bell). Small is nice.

This reminds me of when I started racing in '77, at which time UK law stated that all bikes had to be fitted with a bell. At the start of each race the commisaires checked every bike = no bell no state!!

Lighter and cheaper.
Plus the ring will make you feel like you are a kid again.

Agree on Spurcycle. They now also make a cheaper bell (called compact bell) that to my ears (I have both it and the original Spurcycle bell on different bikes) sounds the same. The main difference is that the mount on the cheaper bell is specific to either 31.8mm or 22mm bars, so you couldn't move the bell from drop to flat bars, or vice versa.

I've got them on all 3 of my bikes for 5+ years. Only downside might be they don't work too well in rain or when it's really cold (near freezing).

Spurcycles are small and loud AND expensive. I did however find a cheap bell, looking a bit like it but it siunded dull, until I removed all the paint from it.
You can make the bell a bit less obtrusive with a thin layer of paint. My folder roadbike bell

Not sure if they improved after the first release but the first ones were garbage!
I really like my spurcycle bells, but with some caveats.
The regular spurcycle bell sits a little higher away from the mount which makes for a more reliable bell when the bar is wrapped with tape. The "dinger" lever however is pretty intrusive when mounted behind the brake levers in the drops.
The compact bell has a much more compact "dinger" that doesn't get in the way of anything, but the bell sits closer to the mount and unless you are really careful the bar tape can easily interfere with the bell itself which makes it not ring.
The ideal solution with be the compact bell on a slightly taller mount to offer more clearance between the bell and the bar.

I often questioned the wisdom of having a bell, the bell requires that you free up a hand to operate it, a hand that would normally be used for braking. In addition to that, how is car going to hear a bell with the windows all closed and the stereo going? Even if the stereo wasn't on no one is going to hear a bell from inside the car!
So, what is the bell good for? ok, so maybe to warn pedestrians, so why can't your voice do the same thing?
