Winspace Hyper

Winspace (Japan) has been teasing the new 3.0 version of the Hypers. Lighter, stiffer and now with a 23mm internal rim width. I have been inquiring of the Mega wheels and it looks as if those are also going to be refreshed to share those same measurements etc.

not sure I would call it "barely a difference" they changed almost everything... but would call it more small progress on each domain :
- 23mm inner width, I am completely comfortable with 21IW but may appeal to most
- wider spokes like the Cadex Ultra, probably gaining a bit of stiffness and/or some aero drag
- Ti ratchet, not really sure there is a benefit there, probably shave few grams and remains solid
- seems they changed a bit the hub geometry to gain a bit of tortional stiffness, doesn't really change the real performance but the wheel may feel more responsive
- 30g gains, would be interesting to know where they gains them from considering the rim is wider.

The external width has not changed so that makes it sort of redundant in terms of trending with the other brands and optimization for 28-30mm tires.

Filament wound pattern is no more.

Some mention the wider spokes is actually more turbulent and is of less aero benefit than the current bladed carbon spoke.

Reviewing specs, I have some doubts on the benefit of this revision particularly on the rim sizes
- From the specs it indeed remains at 28.4mm that (if correct) remains strange. "can't" mount 25 or 25mm tires anymore, and the 28 will measure 29-30 once mounted. 21 IW was giving you the ability to install 25 or 28 and better adjust to rim width.
- weight gain is from 67 (D33) to 43g (D67)
- as for the filament wound, unsure if that is just cosmetic or if the entire rim design changed (the D67 already abandoned it)

Do I just suck at counting or does the front disc brake wheel really have 20 spokes on new wheels?

Small mistake, they are marginally increasing the rim width of the D33 and D45 from 27.6 to 28.4, the D65 was already 28mm... but still the IW and OW are not making sense.

As of the front wheel, they moved from 7-14 (so 7 drive spokes) to a 10-10 (so 10 drive spokes) that may give a bit more tortional stiffness under heavy breaking.

Interestingly inconsistent experience of Winspace customer service here. I just contacted them via chat about a warranty issue with a set of Hyper 67 wheels (crunchy bearings in rear after only 2000km) and I got this:

I haven't replaced bearings in over a year so it might be different now (I understood they changed a lot the team managing winspace).
They never made a problem to pull the bearings out in a wheel under warranty nor question how I did (I used a press, so I did it properly but never questioned my skills) but I always either pulled the bearings and the seal off or just told them the bearing were completely seized and then nothing was moving (happened twice on a rear wheel)... and that is how I have 4 hubs in my spare parts bin

Is there anyone on rim brakes also experiencing very high wear at the front with the stock winspace pads?

Anybody experienced problems with freehub bodies failing in Hyper wheels? I have a set of Hyper 65D wheels, with 20000/25000 Km. So far, I went through two freehub bodies that failed in the same spot, the inner bearing of the freehub body. After 6000 Km, the inner bearing of the freehub came loose and it got stuck in the axle.

The second freehub body failed even more catastrophically, as the bearing disintegrated within the wheel while riding.

Extracted the bearing (in the second case what was left of it) and bought a new freehub body. Winspace customer service saw these pictures and replied that "The freehub is a consumable item, so it is normal for it to be worn out". Not really the answer I was expecting.
