So can we get Hyper/RD270 without rim bed holes? What is the compromise here? Different nipples? Why did they make it with holes only to begin with?

yes you can get them. The nipples are a bit further out of the rim, so its not ideal in aero terms but most likely 1-2W are in any ways for most people neglactable.openwheelracing wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 4:59 amSo can we get Hyper/RD270 without rim bed holes? So are these longer nipples or same nipples? I am guessing standard spoke wrench would do?
Nipples look to be different. And seem much larger. And are heavier. I personally do not care for aero, but better for the looks, and with these big nipples it does not seem great (visually).
If you worry that with you will potencially at some point need to true the wheel by removing the rim tape, I would not worry too much, as carbon spokes are better then steal spokes in that consirn. Mine are centered as new, and am not exactly light feathered and ride on rough roads.

I don't think you can tell the nipples are longer; it doesn't stand out much.openwheelracing wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 6:48 amSo are these longer nipples or same nipples? I am guessing standard spoke wrench would do?
I would recommend no holes in the rim bed; setting up tubeless is easier and no hassle with rim tape.
Not to mention how much easier trueing the wheel is.
The challenge is to lace the rims; it's probably more time consuming; but that's done once and by FS.
Yes I've experienced this with both the Farsport and the CRW wheels. Always associated with some kind of hole/bump in the road. Only happened a few times but it was notable and got my attention. I've continued to ride with no other observable issues.
Having ridden both do you see any advantage of the more expensive CRW?
(My cheap wheelset 500usd just broke in a crash and think about getting a yuanan or farsport set)

This is why I am confused. If nipples are external (I assume with enough area for spoke wrench to grab), then why is "no hole on rim-bed" a big deal from the get-go? I understand it is available now. Plus, what size spoke wrench fits these nipples?

This is a thing that was geared towards and heavily marketed to tubeless users as a fool proof way to set your tires up. Princeton Carbon Works also claimed some added stiffness. As a wheelbuilder, these rims are just a hassle. Lacing is extremely time consuming with the need for learned technique and strong magnets. Also.....openwheelracing wrote:This is why I am confused. Most of these builds are coming with aluminum nipples which are in my opinion the last nipples on earth you want to put a spoke wrench on. They will start cracking soon after. This part makes no sense to me. To use aluminum you need hex bottom nipples that you manipulate from the underside with a nut driver. My personal opinion is this was a cost saving arrangement much like hookless. Just marketed well.
Edit to add. Not being able to visually inspect how much of the nipple the spoke thread is engaging leads to problematic builds.

Hello guys,
Quick question for the owners of hypers+carbon spokes RD270. Do you feel there's been tangible progress compared to some of the earlier carbon-spoked wheels?
I'm coming from some Hunt UD44, Feder 25 DT240 and Scope R5D (55mm older model). I've already had the carbon spoke experience and I'm not sure it's my cup of tea, I noticed I felt more confident descending on steel-spoked wheels, and overall my Hunts felt a bit dead.
I'm currently getting rid of all my wheels and I plan to replace them with just a pair to make space at home. Looking at future-proofing myself a bit with at least 23mm internal for some 28-30c so at the moment my shortlist includes the Hyper 50, LB Turbo or some Duke Baccara X/RX 48 with DT (local wheelbuilder).
Hyper RD270 would cut almost 150g while being more aero than the Hunts but I'm hesitant about the ride feel.
Cheers!

Mine Hypers with RD270 are superb on tricky steep descends (also with lots of holes). Had before also Farsport Ventoux EVO4, and descending did not feel that good to me. Perhaps overly stiff? But I think that it comes down to rim width and tyre width. Hypers with 24int. vs. EVO4 with 19int. Have also Farsport Wave with 24 carbon spokes and 26int., and are even better on tricky descends. But also run wider tyres.JPuerto wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 12:55 pmHello guys,

But when comparing them to steel spokes, I think it is safe to say that my future wheels will all be with carbon spokes.

Thanks for sharing your experience, tbh my "bad" experience with the hunts was also with 25c conti gp5000 s tr. I think they were good overall but when leaning the bike at speed I felt too much of the road. The last month I owned them I did try some 30c tires and lower pressures and they were more confident so that pushed me towards finding something wider.Agent041 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 1:15 pmMine Hypers with RD270 are superb on tricky steep descends (also with lots of holes). I also agree the future is carbon spokes and we are seeing more of the "name brands" going that way.
